Methods of Growing - Hydroponics

Static Solution Culture

• Grown in static water.
• Aeration is addressed by exposure
of the root system or via mechanical
means.
• Raft Solution Culture
• Light is blocked.
• Nutrient solution must be changed
as it is depleted.

Methods of Growing - Hydroponics

Continuous-Flow Solution Culture

• Grown in moving water.
• Easier automation.
• NFT (Nutrient Film Technique)
• Easy achievement of need balance.

Methods of Growing - Aeroponics

Aeroponics
• Nutrients are delivered via a fine
mist.
• Any type of plant can be grown via
true aeroponics system.
• Requires ¼ the nutrients that
hydroponics require.
• Researched by NASA for zero-
gravity applications.

Methods of Growing - Hydroculture

Run-to-Waste System
• Nutrients are delivered via water to
the plant which is contained in a
substrate – or dirt replacement.
• Water + Waste is then cleaned and
recycled for further use.

Substrates
Who the fuck is them
Why Substrates?
• Substrate assists the root system in holding up the weight of the plant.
• Substrate can be any material that isn’t dirt, but some substrates are more
useful than others.

Substrates: Expanded Clay Aggregate
• Clay Pellets are fired and then
expand.
• Lightweight, does not compact.
• Can be cleaned, but only to a certain
extent.

Substrates: Coconut Coir
• Coir is an agricultural byproduct of
coconut production.
• The short fibers of the outer husk
are processed extensively via water
washing.
• The process itself can be extremely
dangerous, but the coir itself has
useful properties as a substrate.

Substrates: Sheep Wool
• Little-used, but very promising.
• Highly-efficient in both air capacity and water capacity.
