RENEWABLE AND
NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES

Guessing Game is a strategy which
can be used as a one of alternative
ways to create a good condition for the
class.
Through games application students
can enjoy the learning, even there is a
common perception that teaching
should be serious to achieve its learn-
ing target.
BRAINSTORMING is a large or small
group activity that encourages students to fo-
cus on a topic and contribute to the free flow of
ideas.
 ASK THE STUDENT TO list DOWN of ideas about where and
when we use energy.
GUESSING GAME?

RENEWABLE RESOURCES
GUESSING GAME?

NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES
OBJECTIVES:
• Identify the renewable and non re-
newable energy resources
• Differentiate renewable energy re-
sources and non-renewable energy re-
sources;
• Suggest ways to reduce the effects of
human activities on natural re-
sources.
WHAT IS NATURAL RESOURCES?

Natural resources are

the raw materials sup-
plied by the Earth and
its processes.
Uses of Natural Resources
• Food and Clothing
• Manufacturing
• Shelter
• Jewelries
• Furniture
TYPES OF NATURAL RE-
SOURCES

RENEWABLE RESOURCES

NON-RENEWABLE RE-
SOURCES
RENEWABLE RESOURCES
Renewable resources are nat-
ural resources that can be re-
plenished in a short period of
time.
● Solar ● Geothermal
● Wind ● Biomass
● Water
SOLAR

Energy from the

sun.
GEOTHERMAL
Energy from
Earth’s heat.
WIND Energy from the
wind.

Why is energy
from the wind
renewable?
BIOMASS
Energy from
burning or-
ganic or living
matter.
Biomass is used to create
methane and alcohol which
are fuels useful in
energy production and in
powering automobiles.
WATER or HYDROELECTRIC
Energy from the
flow of water.
WATER IS
WIDELY USED
TO PRODUCE
ELECTRICITY.
If renewable resources are
resources that can be used
repeatedly
what are renewable re-
sources?
NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES

A nonrenewable resource is a natural re-

source that cannot be re-made or re-grown
at a scale comparable to its consumption.
NUCLEAR ENERGY
Nuclear fission uses
uranium to create en-
ergy.
Nuclear energy is a non-
renewable resource be-
cause once the uranium
is used, it is gone!
COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS
Coal, petroleum, and
natural gas are consid-
ered nonrenewable be-
cause they can not be
replenished in a short
period of time. These
are called fossil fuels.
HOWEVER BOTH HAVE
PROS AND CONS IN
TERMS OF COST, RELIA-
BILITY, EFFICIENCY AND
POLLUTION

SUMMARY

What are the differ-

ences between nonre-
newable and renew-
able resources?
Construct a Venn Diagram
TRUE OR FALSE
1. The world’s most abundant fossil fuel is natural
gas. ______
FALSE
2. Geothermal energy is less of an environmental
hazard compared to fossil fuels. ______
TRUE
3. Biomass is used to create methane and alcohol
which are fuels useful in energy production and
in powering automobiles. ______
TRUE
4. Nonrenewable source is produced from sources
that do not deplete or can be replenished within
a human's life time. _____
FALSE
5. Solar energy is abundant, requires low mainte-
nance, and is environmentally-friendly. _______
TRUE
Sustainability is
the practice of using the
earth’s resources in a wise
and responsible manner that
will allow the resources to be
available for the present and
future generations.

GOAL OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: to

provide resources for the use of present populations
without compromising the availability of those re-
sources for future generations, and without causing
environmental damage that challenges the survival
of other species and natural ecosystems.
Sustainable Ways of Using Natu-
ral Resources
•Turn off lights when you are
not present in a room or not at
home.
•Plant trees.
•Use bio gas and bio fuels
•Ensure the recycling of
wastes.

source from a nonrenewable
source.
2. What activities do we do at
home that contribute to the
wise use of natural re-
sources?
