SEQUENCE, PRIORITY, & FUNCTION


sequence (noun): a continuance or connected series [of events, objects,
people, etc.].

sequence (verb): to arrange [something] in a sequence.

Paragraph Types
Sequencing the information logically
● INTRODUCTORY: Welcomes the reader into the text with “attention-grabbers” and introduces the topic of discussion.

● BODY PARAGRAPH TYPES (LOGICAL ORGANIZATION OF INFORMATION)

○ Comparative: Expresses similarities and differences between things, ideas, and events.

○ Cause and Effect: Presents an outcome first, then follows the topic of discussion with facts and evidence for the context and character of the
topic. It provides answers to the who, what, where, why, when, and how something happened.

○ Problem/Solution: Presents a problem and offers a solution.

○ Sequential Order (Chronology): Describes a series of events that occurred over a period of time.

○ Deductive: Presents the conclusion or specific concept initially then narrows the events and processes that surround it with increasing detail.

○ Inductive: Lays out the pieces of information and/or evidence surrounding a subject or specific topic leading to a greater generalization at the
end.

● CONCLUSION (SUMMARY): Restates the opening purpose of the text, briefly summarizes the supporting evidence of the purpose, and
makes some type of prediction, generally speaking.
