The trachea is the large air tube that leads from the larynx

(voice box) to the bronchi (the large airways at the top of

the lungs). The trachea is made up of rings of cartilage,
and is roughly 4 inches long and 1 inch in diameter. Also
known as windpipe.

A tube is only about
Though the cylindrical
three-quarters of an inch in diameter and 4 to
5 inches long, you wouldn't be able to survive
without it.
FUNCTION OF TRACHEA

 The main function of the trachea is to provide a

clear airway for air to enter and exit the lungs. In
addition, the epithelium lining the trachea produces
mucus that traps dust and other contaminants and
prevents it from reaching the lungs. Cilia on the
surface of the epithelial cells move the mucus
superiorly toward the pharynx where it can be
swallowed and digested in the gastrointestinal tract.
CHOKING AND COUGHING

 The trachea is connected to the same tubing system

that allows a person to swallow, so the respiratory
system has a mechanism to prevent respiratory
failures. When an object blocks the windpipe,
choking occurs. The coughing reflex allows the
ciliated cells to push the object out of the
respiratory system.
