MUSIC
- HARMONY –
⮚Chord
⮚Progression
⮚Consonance
⮚Dissonance
⮚Key and
⮚Tonality
Harmony:
• is what occurs when more than one note is played or sung at
the same time.

• This can be as an interval (two notes, also called a dyad), or

chords of three or more notes.
Chord:
• A chord, in music, is any harmonic set of pitches/frequencies
consisting of multiple notes (also called "pitches") that are heard
as if sounding simultaneously.
• Chords are named according to their root note and the intervals
between the notes that make up the chord. Chords of a diatonic
major scale fall into four types: major, minor, dominant, and
diminished.
Progression:
• A series of two or more chords that are played in succession.
Usually a chord progression ends with a cadence.the
succession of notes or chords which lead to a new one
• the regular succession of chords or the movement of the parts
of a musical composition in harmony, where the key continues
unchanged
Consonance and Dissonance:
• Consonance and dissonance, in music, the impression of
stability and repose (consonance) in relation to the impression
of tension or clash (dissonance) experienced by a listener when
certain combinations of tones or notes are sounded together

• Consonance and dissonance refer to intervals and chords. The

interval between two notes is the number of half steps between
them, and all intervals have a name that musicians commonly
use, like major third (which is 4 half steps), perfect fifth (7 half
steps), or octave.
Key:
Music uses many different keys named after the many different
notes on your keyboard. In other words, you have a musical key
for the notes A, B, C, D, E, F, and G, plus all the sharps and flats.
In music theory, the key of a piece is the group of pitches, or
scale, that forms the basis of a music composition in classical,
Western art, and Western pop music.
TONALITY

❑Tonality is the arrangement of pitches and/or chords of a

musical work in a hierarchy of perceived relations,
stabilities, attractions and directionality. In this hierarchy,
the single pitch or triadic chord with the greatest stability
is called the tonic.
TONALITY
❑A common example of tonality can be the major tonality,
where the tones 'do', 're', 'mi', 'fa', 'so', 'la', and 'ti' are
used,
❑with 'do' being the tonal center or home-note.
❑ An example of tonality is the pitch of a person's singing
voice.
❑The sense of tonality tells us whether a piece of music
sounds right or not.

⮚Instrumentation
TONE COLOR
TONE COLOR
❑Is also known as timbre, is the quality of a sound that is
not characterized as frequency (pitch), duration (rhythm),
or amplitude (volume).
❑Is a musical term for these distinct and unique sounds
❑Ex: “The sound that a trumpet has as opposed to a
saxophone.”
TONE COLOR
REGISTER

❑It is the "height" or range of a note, set of pitches or pitch

classes, melody, part, instrument, or group of instruments.
A higher register indicates higher pitch.
And the example is…
▪ Violins are in a higher register than cellos.
REGISTER
Register In Singing
- A vocal register is a range of tones in the human voice
produced by a particular vibratory pattern of the vocal folds.
These registers include modal voice (or normal voice),
vocal fry, falsetto, and the whistle register.
Example: Bass, Baritone, Tenor, Alto, Mezzo-Soprano,
and Soprano.
RANGE

❑Range refers to the distance between the highest and

lowest notes found in a given melody. When a piece of
music has wide range, there is a great distance between the
highest and lowest pitches heard.
RANGE
INTRUMENTATION

❑Instrumentation, also called orchestration, in music,

arrangement or composition for instruments. Both deal
with musical instruments and their capabilities of
producing various timbres or colours.
INTRUMENTATION

❑The five major types of musical instruments are…

⮚Percussion
⮚Woodwind
⮚String
⮚brass and keyboard.
