Music Symbols

● Are marks and symbols in musical

notation that indicate various
aspects of how a piece of music is to
be performed.
● There are symbols to communicate
information about many musical
elements including pitch, duration
and dynamics.
● And show details about specific
playing techniques.
LINES
STAFF
• The music staff is a system of 5 lines and 4
spaces on which composers place notes and
rests when creating a piece of music. Always
count the lines and spaces from the bottom.

Bar lines organize and separate the measures on a staff in
a piece of music. The vertical (up and down) lines are the
bar lines. A double bar line signals the end of a piece of
music. Measures are the spaces between bar lines.

G Clef or Treble Clef
● A clef defines the pitch
range of the staff on which it
is placed.
● This is a treble clef which
you find at the beginning of
the staff.
● The treble clef is the most
encountered clef in modern
notation.
Bass Clef
 Also known as the bass clef, the F
clef is used to indicate pitches below
middle C.
 The pitch "f" is indicated by placing
a note on the 4th line.
 Originally the clef designation of
"F" came about through the use of
the letter "F" at the end of the staff to
indicate the position of the pitch "f".
Alto Clef (Viola Clef) / Tenor Clef
 The viola clef is a C clef
placed right in the middle of
the stave and was used for
alto singers too, so its name
is actually "alto clef".

 The tenor clef is a C clef

used for bassoon, cello,
trombone and double bass
when the notes et very high.
Draw a staff with a treble clef
and all of the parts learned
today. Label each part and
number the line and spaces.
There should be 5 measures.
