RESEARCH BACKGROUND
This research provides traffic simulation models using PTV VISSIM to calculate CO, NOx emissions and fuel consumption at
two intersections (Roundabout, and Signalized intersection), and propose alternatives that would balance emissions and
consumption. Both intersections are located in the industrial area in Gyor, Hungary.

RESEARCH AIM
• Create illustrative models of the current traffic situation, using PTV Vissim software.
• Assessment of existing intersections' emission and fuel consumption: based on the results of
the PTV Vissim model.
• Propose solutions in order to solve the exhaust emission and fuel consumption increasing
problems.
DATA COLLECTION: ROUNDABOUT
DATA COLLECTION: SIGNALIZED INTERSECTION
MODEL VALIDATION

•Model validation was made after the model review was finalized. This process included
modifications that are made to the model network. After few model runs are done, the results are
evaluated and compared with data collected in the field.
•Travel time data was verified by comparing average travel time records from the field to the
produced from the model.
•Validation process was done for the each enter routes for morning and evening periods for both
intersections.
MODEL VALIDATION

•A T-test is made as a type of statistical method to compare the average values of two data groups
and verify if they are from the same interval.
•To calculate the degree of confidence in the sampling process, confidence intervals is calculated
using statistical methods after running the simulation for ten times.
MODEL VALIDATION

•the confidence level 95% as calculated from:

•CI= x̄ ± t* σ / (√n),
Where,
•CI= Confidence Interval
•x̄: Average
•σ: Standard Deviation
•n: Sample size, which equals to ten, for the ten simulation runs
•t: t-value at 95% confidence level and DoF of n=10
•DoF = n - 1
ROUNDABOUT VALIDATION

The results of the validity test on each route for both selected periods. As shown by the tables, the
morning and evening models are valid and calibrated.

RESULTS: ALTERNATIVE SELECTION
CONCLUSION
- Micro simulation using PTV VISSIM has been conducted in this research to examine the current roundabout and
signalized intersection in the industrial area in Gyor, Hungary, and to evaluate the environmental impact, and
propose two alternatives for each case that would balance CO, NOx emissions and fuel consumption.
- Based on 265 simulation runs, for all the toxic emissions measured in the research the type of intersection has a
considerable impact emissions and fuel consumption.

- Replacing the roundabout by signalized intersection shows no improvement in balancing the toxic emissions for both
proposed alternatives. However, the research shows that replacing the signalized intersection by roundabout for the two
proposed alternatives shows a significant improvement regarding the toxic emissions.
