This document contains instructions for two hydrology engineering assignment problems. Problem 1 involves calculating the cross-sectional area, average velocity, and discharge of a 5m channel given depth measurements and travel time data. Problem 2 involves establishing a rating curve from given stage-discharge data by assuming a stage of 20.50 for zero discharge.

May 2017 Problem 1 Determine the cross-sectional area perpendicular to flow in a 5 m channel. The depth measurements taken are as follow: Distance from bank (m) 1 2 3 4 Depth of flow 0.72 1.14 1.22 0.68 The float method was used to measure the surface velocity of flow in each segment of the channel. The test section was 20 m long. The travel time measured for each segment was: Channel segment (m) Travel time (s) 0-1 19.8 1-2 17.7 2-3 16.3 3-4 16.9 4-5 18.9 Determine the average velocity of flow and the discharge in the channel. Rating for coefficient is as follow: Depth (m) 0.7 0.9 1.2 Problem 2 The stage discharge data of gauging at a site is given below. Establish the rating curve by assuming the stage value corresponding to zero discharge as 20.50.
