BENDING AND
SHEARING STRESS
IN A BEAM
RECALL BASIC FORMULAS
PROBLEM 1: An 80% grade Apitong-beam 4 m long is simply supported at both ends. It
carries a uniform load of 10 kN/m including its own weight. The wooden section has a width
of 200 mm and a depth of 260 mm. Use dressed dimension by reducing its dimensions by 10
mm. a) Calculate max flexural stress b) max shearing stress c) maximum deflection of beam

a) Max flexural stress

b) Max shearing stress
c) Maximum deflection

PROBLEM 2: A wooden log used as a footbridge to span 3-m gap is required to support a
concentrated load of 60 kN at midspan. If the allowable stress in shear is 0.7 MPa, what is the
diameter of the log that would be needed. The log is very nearly circular and the bending
stresses are adequately met. Neglect the weight of the log.

(LAMINATED BEAM)PROBLEM 3: A production company produced a 2meter- gluelaminated
beam comprised of three planks, each 150mm and 60mm glued together to form a section of 150mm
by 180mm high. The shear stress in glue is 600 Kpa, shear stress in wood of 900 Kpa and Flexural
stress of 8MPa. Calculate the uniform load if the shear stress in glue, shear stress in wood and
flexural stress is not to exceed its value.

(RETAINING WALL)PROBLEM 4: A production company produced a 2meter- gluelaminated
beam comprised of three planks, each 150mm and 60mm glued together to form a section of 150mm
by 180mm high. The shear stress in glue is 600 Kpa, shear stress in wood of 900 Kpa and Flexural
stress of 8MPa. Calculate the uniform load if the shear stress in glue, shear stress in wood and
flexural stress is not to exceed its value.

(CHB AND TIMBER)PROBLEM 6: A simply supported 150mmx 300mm wooden beam weighing
5KN/m3 with 6 meters span carries a 150mm CHB sitting on a 50mm mortar weighing 23.5KN/m3.
Wood bending stress is 8.27MPa, shearing stress is 0.76MPa. Assume CHB height of 200mm and
mortar filling is 25mm. Determine a) max uniform load that the beam could carry. B)max height of
CHB wall that the beam could carry c) How many layers of CHB that the beam could carry.

(DESIGNING A BEAM)PROBLEM 7: A simply supported beam carries a uniform load of span of 9
meters and with sufficient lateral supports has bending stress of 12.40MPa, E=13,000MPa. Calculate
the depth of the beam so that when the allowable stress is reached, the deflection is 1/360 of the
beam span. If the base is 300mm, how much of the uniform loading can it safely support and
compute also the shearing stress of the beam.
