SOUL-CENTERED
VIEW
SUPERNATURALISM

• Supernaturalist theories are views that meaning in life must be constituted by a certain relationship
with a spiritual realm
• If someone claims that god or a soul does not exists or if they exist but one fails to have the right relationship
with them, then supernaturalism entails that one’s life is meaningless
DIVISION OF SUPERNATURALISM

• Supernaturalist thinkers in the monotheistic tradition are usefully divided into those with
• God centered view
• Holds a some kind of connection with God (understood to be a spiritual person who is all-knowing, all-good, and all-
powerful and who is the ground of the physical universe) to constitute meaning in life
• Soul centered view
• Holds that having a soul and putting it into a certain state to be what makes life meaning, even if God does not exist.
SOUL-CENTERED VIEW

• Another theory under supernaturalist view was the soul-centered view

• It holds that having a soul and putting it into a certain state to be what makes life meaningful, even if God
does not exist, is the meaning of life.
• Is it the view that the meaning in life comes from relating in a certain way, to a immortal, spiritual substance
that supervenes on one’s body when it is alive and that will forever outlive its death.

• Judaism
• Confucianism
