A. DEFINITION
Passive voice is a type of sentence or
clause in which the subject receives the
action of the verb. The passive sentence
uses the pattern: TO BE + VERB-III
(Kalimat pasif adalah kalimat dimana subject-nya bukan
pelaku perbuatan. Dalam kalimat pasif,subjek kalimat
adalah penerima tindakan)
B. PASSIVE VOICE PATTERNS

The rules change the sentence from active to passive


(The rules of Passive Voice) are:

1. The sentence must have oject (transitive verb). It must


have question word which asks object.
2. Object in active will be subject in passive.
3. Subject in active will be object in passive.
4. We must use past participle (verb-III).
4. The arrange of sentence depends on tenses.

Functions of the passive voice

The passive voice is used to show interest in the


person or object that experiences an action rather
than the person or object that performs the
action. In other words, the most important thing
or person becomes the subject of the sentence.
Examples
Sometimes we use the passive voice because we
don't know or do not want to express who
performed the action.

FORMULAS
The formula used is as follows.

S + be + past participle + By agent


Description:

S : subject
Be : auxiliary verb / to be (am, is, are, was, were, etc.)
Past participle: verb 3 (third form verb)
By agent : actor of theaction

FYI, in the passive voice, the auxiliary verbs used determine the
type of tense used in the sentence. For example:
· When using am, is, are, the sentence is Present Tense.
· When using was, were, the sentence is Past Tense.

Simple Present
Active : She feeds the parrot.
Passive : The parrot is fed by her.

Simple Past
Active : Someone stole his money.
Passive : His money was stolen by someone.

Simple Future
Active : He will write an article.
Passive : An article will be written by him.

Past Perfect Continous


Active : Her mother had been buying a novel.
Passive : A novel had been being bought by her mother.
Past Perfect
Active : He had bought a hat.
Passive : A hat had been bought by him.

Future Perfect
Active : He will have fed his dog.
Passive : His dog had been fed by him.

Future Perfect Continous


Active : He will have been buying an apple.
Passive : An apple will have been being bought by him.

Present Continous
Active : He is buying a novel.
Passive : A novel is being bought by him.
Present Perfect
Active : He has bought a novel.
Passive : A novel has been bought by him.

Present Perfect Continous


Active : He has been buying a novel.
Passive : A novel has been being bought by him.

Past Continous
Active : He was buying a novel.
Passive : A novel was being bought by him.

Future Continous
Active : He will be buying a novel.
Passive : A novel will be being bought by him
