INTRODUCTION
Man has always been curious to know the nature of things around him. He has been continuously
exploiting his surroundings in all the possible ways to penetrate deep into the origin of all the
things. He began with understanding the physical and chemical composition of various substances.
This project tries to analysis the various metals present in the coins used in many parts of India ,
which were used in ancient times as well as the ones which are used in the present times.

The primary step for this project is to prepare aqua regia by pouring three test tubes of concern. HNO 3
and one test tube of HCl .

Next step is to dissolve Coins In aqua regia and then carry out the analysis.

CHEMICAL USED: dil. HCl , conc. HNO3 , K4[Fe(CN)6] , NH4OH , NH4Cl , NaOH etc.
PROCEDURE
1. Prepare aqua reqia by pouring three test tube HCl (i.e in ratio of1:3)
and stir it.

2. Take 4 china dishes and put equal amount of aqua regia in it. Put the
coins in dishes and label them according to coins present in it. Leave it
undisturbed for atleast two hour.
3. After two hours, coins will dissolve in aqua regia and the solution is
ready for salt analysis.
4. Now proceed step by step analysis of the radicals present in each coin.
HISTORY OF INDIAN COINS
The history of coins extends from ancient times to the present, and is related to economic
history., the history of minting technique, and the history of coin collecting. Since the time they
were invented in 700BC coins have been the most utmost universal embodiment of money. The
first coins were made of electrum, a naturally occurring pale yellow mixture of gold and silver
that was further alloyed with silver and copper. Ancient coins were produced through a process
of hitting a hammer positioned over an anvil. This were produced primarily cast coinage, and
this spread to south-asia and Japan. The type of mintage method (being hammered, milled or
cast) does limit the materials which can be used for the coin. For example, antimony coins,
(which are very rare) are nearly always cast examples, because of the brittle nature of the metal,
and thus it would break if deformed, which is a key part of the milling and hammering process.

RESULT
50 paisa coin contain Nickel, Iron And Magnesium
cation.
One rupee coin contain Copper , Nickel and Iron cation.

2 rupee coin contain Nickel , Copper and Iron cation.

5 rupee coin contain Copper and Nickel.
PRECAUTIONS

1. Aqua regia should be prepared in accurate proportions.

2. Coins should be dried and cleaned before they are put in regia.
3. Distilled water should be used to prepare original solution.

4. The solution be clear i.e. it shouldn’t contain any suspension or

precipitate.
