WHAT IS ENERGY & TYPES OF
SOURCES OF ENERGY?
 Energy is the ability of an object to do work.
 It may exist in potential, kinetic, thermal, electrical, chemical, nuclear.

TYPES OF SOURCES OF ENERGY:

1. Renewable Sources of Energy: Energy from a source that is not depleted
when used, such as wind or solar power.
2. Non-Renewable Source of Energy: Non-renewable energy comes from sources
that will eventually run out, such as oil and coal.
WIND ENERGY

 Wind Energy is the use of wind turbines to generate

electricity.
 Wind power is a popular, sustainable, renewable energy source
that has a much smaller impact on the environment than
burning fossil fuels.
 All renewable energy (except tidal and geothermal power)
ultimately comes from the sun.
 The earth receives watts of power from the sun.
 About 1 or 2%of this energy is converted to wind energy
( which is about 50-100 times more than the energy converted
to biomass by all plants on earth)
WIND ENERGY

 Winds are influenced by ground surface at altitudes up to

100 meters.
 Wind is slowed by surface roughness and obstacles.
 In 2020, wind supplied almost 1600 TWh of electricity,
which was over 5% of worldwide electrical generation
and about 2% of energy consumption.
 A wind turbines obtains its power input by converting the
force of the wind into a torque( – Turning Force) acting
on the rotor blades.
WIND FARMS & ITS TYPES
 An area of land with a group of energy-producing windmills or
wind turbines.
 TYPES OF WIND FARMS:
 1. On – Shore Farms:
 Cheaper than coal and gas plants.
 They have a greater visual impact on the landscape than
any power station.
 Needed to built in rural areas.
 2. Off – Shore Farms:
 They provides a steadier and stronger source of energy.
 They have less visual impact than On – Shore Wind Farms.
 There is less Off – Shore wind power/Farms at present.
 Construction and maintenance costs are very much expansive.

WINDMILL DESIGN

 A Windmill captures wind energy and then uses a

generator to convert it to electrical energy.

 The design of a windmill is an integral part of how

efficient it will be.

 When designing a windmill, one must decide on the

size of the turbine, and the size of generator.
WIND TURBINE: DESIGN
 1. Foundation
 2. Connection to Electric grid
 3. Tower
 4. Access Ladder
 5. Wind orientation Control (Yaw Control)
 6. Nacelle
 7. Generator
 8. Anemometer
 9. Electric and Mechanical Brake
 10. Gearbox
 11. Rotor Blade
 12. Blade pitch control
 13. Rotor Hub
Types of Wind Turbines

 LARGE TURBINES
 Able to deliver electricity at lower cost then smaller
turbines, because foundation costs, planning costs, etc.
are independent of size.
 Well suited for Off – Shore Wind Plants.
 In areas where it is difficult to find sites, one large
turbine on a tall tower uses the wind extremely
efficiently.
 MHI Vestas V164 – 9.5MW.
 Power rating – 9.5MW
 Rotor Diameter – 164m
Types of Wind Turbines

 SMALL TURBINES
 Local electric grids may not be able to handle
the large electrical outputs from a large turbine,
so smaller turbines may be more suitable.
 High costs for foundation for large turbines may
not be economical in some areas.
 Landscape consideration.
WIND TURBINES: No. of Blades

 Most common design is the 3 – blade design, because of

the stability of the turbine.
 A rotor with an odd number of rotor blades can be
considered to be similar to a disc addressing the
dynamic behaviour of the machine.
 A rotor with an even number of blades will give stability
problems for a machine with rigid and stiff structure.
 But two-bladed turbines will wobble when they turn to
face the wind. This is because their angular momentum
in the vertical axis changes depending on whether the
blades are vertical or horizontal.
ADVANTAGES OF WIND ENERGY

 Wind is reliable and infinite renewable energy source.

 Wind energy is cost effective, and prices are dropping still.
 Wind energy reduces carbon emission when used instead of fossil fuels.
 Few running costs when the turbines are up and running.
 Off – Shore wind farms can take advantage of Off – Shore wind flow, without
affective the landscape view.
 Wind farms can be built on existing farms or ranches.
DIS-ADVANTAGES OF WIND
ENERGY
 Wind energy can be unpredictable as the amount of electricity generated is
dependent on the speed and direction of the wind.
 Wind farms can affect the visual appearance of the landscape.
 Wind turbines can damage the habitats of birds and marine life.
 Wind farms can be expensive to construct.
 Turbines might cause noise and aesthetic pollution.
WHAT DID I LEARN?

 First of all, they are renewable source of energy which means the source of their
energy can’t deplete.
 They creates the source of revenue for farmers and ranchers in the form of land
lease payments and an increased local tax base.
 They have the great impacts on the electricity supply and we completely don’t
have to rely on the other sources of energy because it also plays a crucial role in
the production of electricity without causing damage to the environment.
