Introduction
Childrens get frequent and regular opportunities to
explore and learn in the outdoor environment and this
should not be seen as an optional extra. The purpose of
school is to prepare students for life beyond school.
Todays society has a higher demand for self-awarness and
more specialized skills. One of the easiest ways to help
advance students is by incorporating learning experiences
outside the classroom.
Concept of learning outside
Ivan illich's concept " Deschooling Society "
introduced in 1974.In 1987,Lauren Resnik
popularized this concept. The students get both
academic and non-academic from outside
learning. Learning non-formally in a social
setting is called as "Out of school learning ".
Students learning from home using electronics
media, particularly the internet is also included
some under out of school learning.
Salient features of out of school learning

• Learning is a social setting.

• Learning through direct experiences.
• Unstructured but well planned
learning.environments.
• Learning in collaboration.
• Giving importance to Learning through observation.
• Learning achievement is evaluated not in terms of
individual performance but by the performance of
the group.
Purposes of learning outside the classroom
• The students can develop keen observation, ability
to select and use tool and techniques, developing
scientific temper and aesthetic sense.
• Developing social skills like collaboration with
fellow students and sharing learning with others.
• Getting training in context- specific skills.
• Collecting basic information about a particular
lesson.
• Developing the ability to adapt a day to day life
situations.
Learning outside classroom
• Student act independently and get knowledge
through direct experiences.
• Students share the learning activities among
themselves and work together to learn.
• Students will get higher social behavior.
• Knowledge obtained by students is empirical and
functional.
• Practical utility is more.
• They get ability to adapt themselves to new
situations.
• Assessment of learning achievement by group
performance are the important features.
• Learning activities based on observation.
Importance of learning outside classroom

One cannot get all the information from their

classroom alone, from natural and social environment
he get functional knowledge.
John Dewey advocated learning through project work.
Observational learning occupies important place.
Observing objects, events, gathering information,
analyzing, classifying, and synthesizing data etc wil
develop.
Approaches to Learning outside the classroom
Internet is widely used now for gathering information.
Online learning and virtual classrooms are now part of
out of class learning.
Usually 3 approaches are followed

1 Providing field training

2 Field Research
3 Internet web based learning

Field training also known as field trip. There are 3 phases

in Field trip. 1 pre- field stage
2 field work stage
3 post field stage
Pre- field stage
Fieldtrip stage
Post field stage.
Field work stage
Teacher makes
Pre field stage arrangements and
Teacher gives a reaches particular place
key concept of with students and give
brief directions.
fieldtrip through
images and
videos.
Post field stage
After field trip, teacher and students returning to the
classroom and duscuss what they had seen and heard.

Sensing the problem, formulation of hypothesis, data

analysis, hypothesis testing
Sensing the problem
Teacher explained regarding the subject matter in a
topic or as a result of what the students have learned
from their own situations.
Formulations of Hypothesis
Critical thinking about the problem. Students propose a
statement
Data Analysis
Processing the information or raw data, classifying and
tabulating the data and statistical analysis
Hypothesis testing
Solution to the problem
Learning through websites
Advantages

• It is learner centerd.
• Encourage knowledge for the active participation
and knowledge construction.
• Develops higher order cognitive abilities like
analysis, synthesis and Evaluation.
• Develops corporation and understanding.

Limitations of learning outside class
