Battery Pack Function

The main function of the battery pack is to power the

electric traction motor.

On a hybrid vehicle, the HV battery

battery pack is charged Electronic pack

To produce a higher voltage, connect additional cells in

series with the first cell.

The same current flows through all cells. Therefore, the

capacity (amps  hours) of the ‘battery pack’ is the same
as the capacity of the individual cells. Next >

Increasing Battery Capacity

Extra cells increase the size and weight of the battery

pack, which is not good for hybrid and electric vehicles.

Many battery pack manufacturers prefer to use cells that

have a capacity big enough to ‘do the job’, and connect
them in series.

Battery Energy and Power

The design of battery cells can

be optimised for either power
or energy use.

NiMH batteries typically

Hybrid vehicles require batteries provide higher power
and lower energy.
that can provide high power for
short periods of time.

Electric vehicles require batteries

that can provide high energy for
a long time period. Li-ion batteries typically
provide higher energy
and lower power.

Other Design Considerations

Here are some other design considerations:

 Internal cell
connections must be
low resistance; they
are usually welded
rather than soldered,
to limit possible heat
damage.

Other Design Considerations

Here are some other

design considerations:

contact and safety.

 Mounting frames, especially those for lithium-ion

working cell.

Battery Pack Concerns

Some typical concerns are shown here:

 The cost of a battery

pack may account for
up to one third of the
total cost of a vehicle.
