TUTORIAL 2

Gantt Chart or Bar Chart

Example (1)
The table below shows the activities of a construction project, their dependencies, estimated
durations (weeks) and number of labourers needed. Develop the following.
(i) Project plan using the Bar Chart method
(ii) Draw the distribution histogram for using these labourers
(iii) Calculate the efficiency of labourers if you know that 17 labourers are available throughout the
project period.
(iv) Status of the project at the end of week 6.

At week 6:
•Tasks (A),(B) and (C) completed
•Tasks (F) and (G) have not begun yet.
•Task (D) = 1/5 = 20% completed
•Task (E) = 1/7 = 14.28% completed
•The project total time = 15 weeks
•Total number of labourers available during the project period = 17*15= 255 Labourer
•Actual number of labourers= 4+4+8+8+8+12+14+14+14+14+10+10+4+4+4= 132 Labourers
•Efficiency of labourers usage= (132/255) *100= 51.76%
Example (2)
The table below shows the activities of a construction project, their dependencies,
estimated durations (months) and number of labours needed. Develop the following.
(i) Project plan using the Bar Chart method
(ii) Draw the distribution histogram for using these labourers
(iii) Calculate the efficiency of labours if you know that 20 labours are available throughout
the project period and the total number of labours available for the whole project period.
(iv) Status of the project at the end of month 12.
