• "5 Filipino Scientists and their

contributions in the field of

science and technology"
SHENA MARIE A. SUAREZ

1.) Ramon Cabanos Barba
✓ Recognized for his significant
contributions to Philippine
Agriculture through horticulture.
✓ He developed a process that
caused flowering and fruiting of
mango trees three times a year,
instead of once a year, so
dramatically improving yields.
SLIDESMANIA.CO
• His work found applications in
advancing the mango export industry.
His research on tissue culture of many
horticultural crops, bananas, cassava,
and sugarcane among others, enabled
the development of methodologies in
physiology and plant breeding.

• In 2013, Ramon Barba became National in the Philippines for his
"distinguished achievements in the field of plant physiology, focusing
on induction of flowering of mango and micropropagation of important
crop species".

• His invention, widely used today, revolutionized the Philippine mango

industry, making the drop one of the country's top export earners.

• He studied Tropical Fruit Production at university because he was

always interested in the problems of mango production.

2.) Josefino Cacas Comiso
✓ He has studied many polar processes and
was among the first researchers to report
dramatic changes in the Arctic sea ice cover
and accelerated warming at high latitudes in the
Northern Hemisphere.
✓ He is a recipient of the NASA Exceptional
Achievement in Science Medal (one of the most
prestigious awards given to a NASA scientist) and
many other awards.

• He is recognized for his works on observing the
characteristics of Antarctica by using satellite
images.
• Comiso initially wanted to be a doctor of
medicine, but was involved in a car accident as a
youth and broke his femur. His education was
interrupted for two years, and when he returned, a
subsequent aptitude test helped point him toward
mathematics and physics as a career.

3.) Jose Bejar Cruz Jr.
✓ Known internationally in the field of
engineering and for outstanding
contributions to the field of automatic
control in research, teaching, and service.
✓ In research, he has made major
contributions to the theory and practice of
automatic control. His work in the 1970s
and 1980s on the control of leader-follower
systems is still considered one of the major
contributions of the half-century in the

theory of hierarchical control systems.

• He implement the Master of Engineering programs in several
associations of engineering schools he helped to expand; the
appointment of many ESEP scholars in Ph.D. sandwich programs
in the US and the agreement for short stay and observations to the
US by officials and scholars from the engineering faculty of
different universities in the Philippines. With all that, Dr. Jose Cruz
has enormously contributed to the development of the quality of
engineering education in the Philippines.

• He is a native of the town of Malolos, the capital of
the province of Bulacan in the Philippines. He
completed his secondary studies at the Bulacan
Provincial High School in his native town. He then
went to the University of the Philippines, Diliman,
Quezon City, Philippines, for his college studies.
There, he completed his BS in Electrical Engineering,
summa cum laude, in 1953, the first recipient of such
an honor from the university. The following year, he
journeyed to the US and earned an MS for Electrical
Engineering from MIT in Cambridge.

4.) Lourdes Jansuy Cruz
✓ She admits that biochemistry was not her
forte in college but, she did not let this stop
her from pursuing the field. She has never
regretted her decision.
✓ Ever since she was a kid, she wanted to
get into science. Her first science course in
college was very interesting for her, noting
that her interest in chemistry was probably
inspired by her family.
SLIDESMANIA.CO
• Is lauded for her research on Conus
geographus, a marine snail found in the
Philippines.
• Working alongside fellow experts, she studied the
properties of snail venom, which were largely
unknown at the time.

• Their research paved the way toward finding practical uses

of conotoxin for leading to breakthroughs in neuroscience and
medicine.

5.) Fabian Millar Dayrit
✓ Known for his phytochemical work for the
development of lagundi as part of the National
Integrated Research Program on Medicinal
Plants.
✓ He has worked on other important natural
products, including medicinal plants, coconut oil,
and carrageenan. He is was on the development
of standardization and profiling methods for
medicinal plants.

Did you know?
• Conrado Dayrit, a physician and pharmacologist, and
Milagros Millar are the parents of Dr. Fabian "Toby" Dayrit.
Dr. Dayrit knew he wanted to study science in college from
the start.
• His research established the effectiveness of lagundi for
colds, and through the combined efforts of various Philippines
research institutions, lagundi tablets and syrups were
developed and are now available as medicines in our country.
This provides alternatives to synthetic drugs because plant-
based medicines from indigenous Philippine plants help treat
other illnesses. Dayrit attempts to prevent diseases by working
