• Composite Material
• Different Types of Composite Materials :
1. Ceramic Matrix
2. Metal Matrix
3. Polymer Matrix
4. Carbon or Graphite Matrix
COMPOSITE MATERIAL
• A composite material is a material which is
produced from two or more constituent materials.
• These constituent materials have notably dissimilar
chemical or physical properties and are merged to
create a material with properties unlike the
individual elements.
TYPES OF COMPOSITE MATERIALS

• Based on Matrix
1. Ceramic Matrix
2. Metal Matrix
3. Polymer Matrix
4. Carbon Matrix
CERAMIC MATRIX

• Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are a

subgroup of composite materials and a subgroup
of ceramics.
• They consist of ceramic fibers embedded in a
ceramic matrix.
• The fibers and the matrix both can consist of any
ceramic material, whereby carbon and carbon
fibers can also be regarded as a ceramic
material.
CERAMIC MATRIX

• CHARACTERISTICS:
• Thermal resistance: While technical ceramics are proven thermal insulators, CMC is adding
dimensional components (namely fibers, matrix and pores) that enhance the resistance to thermal
shocks.
1. Lightweight: Compared with the previous composite technologies used in extreme environment, a
CMC part is much lighter. For example, it is 1/3 the weight of nickel superalloys for a similar part.
2. Fracture toughness: CMC material is less brittle than a conventional technical ceramic, since fibers
contribute to bridge the cracks
3. Electrical insulation: Oxide CMCs show dielectric transparency, unlike other types of CMCs.
4. Chemical stability: High Purity Alumina matrix shows excellent corrosion resistance against most
chemicals
CERAMIC MATRIX

APPLICATIONS:
• Internal combustion engines for automobiles

• Gas turbines

• Process equipment

• Furnaces

• Refractory components

• Nuclear components

• Spacecraft re-entry shielding

• Welding nozzles and tools, and brazing fixtures.

METAL MATRIX
• Metal matrix composites (MMCs) are
composite materials that contain at least two
constituent parts – a metal and another material
or a different metal.
• The metal matrix is reinforced with the other
material to improve strength and wear.
• In structural applications, the matrix is usually
composed of a lighter metal such as magnesium,
titanium, or aluminum.
• In high temperature applications, cobalt and
cobalt-nickel alloy matrices are common.
METAL MATRIX
• CHARACTERISTICS :

• Fire resistant

• Operate in wider range of temperatures

• Do not absorb moisture

• Better electrical and thermal conductivity

• Resistant to radiation damage

• Do not display outgassing

• Low CTE and light weight

• Good damping and high compression strength

1. High specific stiffness and strength.

METAL MATRIX
• APPLICATIONS :

• Pushrods for racing engines

• Carbide drills

• Tank armors

• Automotive industry – disc brakes, driveshaft, engines

• Aircraft components – structural component of the jet’s landing gear

• Bicycle frames

• Space systems

• High density multi-chip modules in electronics

1. Parts in particle accelerators
METAL MATRIX
POLYMER MATRIX
• A polymer matrix composite (PMC) is a composite
material composed of a variety of short or continuous
fibers bound together by an organic polymer matrix.
• PMCs are designed to transfer loads between fibers
of a matrix.
• Polymer matrix composites (PMCs) can be divided
into three sub-types:
1. Thermosets
2. ThermoPlastics
3. Rubber
POLYMER MATRIX

• CHARACTERISTICS :
• Low specific weight
• High material stability against corrosion
• Good electrical and thermal insulation
• Ease of shaping and economic mass production
1. Attractive optical properties
2. Good puncture resistance
3. High fracture toughness
POLYMER MATRIX

• APPLICATIONS :
1. Automotive industry – Body panels, leaf springs, driveshaft, bumpers, doors, racing car
bodies.

2. Aircraft and aerospace industry – Used in the construction of structural parts for military
aircraft, space shuttles, and satellite systems.
3. Biomedical applications – Medical implants, orthopaedic devices, MRI scanners, X-ray
tables, and prosthetics.
4. Electrical – Panels, housing, switchgear, insulators, and connectors.
5. Industrial – Chemical storage tanks, pressure vessels, pump housing, and valves. PMCs
are also used in impellers, blades, blower and pump housings, and motor covers.

• Carbon Matrix reinforced by graphite matrix.
• Carbon-Carbon Matrix are the woven mesh of
carbon fibres.
• They are used for their high strength and high
modulus of rigidity.
• They are lightweight material which can withstand
temperature upto 3000⁰ C .
CARBON MATRIX

1. Excellent Thermal Shock Resistance upto 2000⁰C.
2. Low coefficient of thermal expansion.
3. High thermal conductivity.
4. Low coefficient of friction in fiber direction.
5. High Abrasion Resistance.
