Introduction
Ship stability has always been a matter of concern throughout the
maritime industry. Common incidents still happen despite the development of
innovations set to tackle the problem. One of the solutions the researchers came
up with was the idea of using round tanks applied on Container Vessels. The
researchers came across the idea from a different study that employed round
tanks as the chosen design for a marine mammal recovery and rehabilitation
vessel. Researchers of the marine mammal recovery and rehabilitation vessel
investigated the effects of free surfaces and their mitigation through the
deployment of horizontal slosh baffles within the tank. The Container Vessel
was the ship of choice because it is a highly demanded type of vessel that
experiences numerous dynamic loads during the loading and unloading of
containers. This led the researchers to think of its useful implications on the
overall transverse stability of a ship if this design were to be deployed to
Container Vessel’s tank itself.

Sloshing has a great effect on the tanks system.

 Zhang & Sun (2014)

If a liquid moves in a nonlinear motion, the slosh force is lesser than that of which moving

 P Krata (2013)
Ship tanks arrangement causes liquid sloshing. There is a significant effect on the stability
because of liquid sloshing.

The baffle located close to the free surface is effective in controlling the surface
fluctuations. Sloshing frequencies are affected by the filling ratio.
RELATED LITERATURE

The build up of water on the vehicle deck which resulted to free surface effect that causes
the ship to capsize.

 MS Estonia (27 September, 1974)

The ship has a slight list to starboard side due to cargo lading. Too much weight had been
placed on the stbd side, which causes the free surface thus resulting to the shifting of its center of
gravity.

RELATED STUDY
 MJ van Twillert (2015)
The effects of the ships motions due to the sloshing are directly proportional to the size of
the tanks. The greater the volume of the tank can cause an increase sloshing motion.
03
Statement of the Problem
The main objective of the study is to assess the Free Surface Effect of round shape tanks on Container Vessels,
verify the overall outcome on the transverse stability of the vessel, and present a comparative analysis between
conventional and round tanks.
The study would like to assess the following:
1. To be able to design round-shaped tanks;
2. To identify the:
2.1 Ship Hydrostatic Properties on Container Vessel;
2.2 Intact Stability; and
2.3 Free Surface Effect
3. To be able to analyze the Free Surface Effect of round tanks compared to the conventional tanks; and
4. To be able to present a comparative analysis of the Free Surface Effect for the round and conventional shape
tanks.
