Computer Assisted Language Learning
”“ Definition

Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) origins can

be traced back to the 1960s until the late 1970s. It is the
general term for the range of processes and activities or it is
an approach that employ computers in the teaching and
learning of a new language . By the usage of presentations ,
reinforcement and assessment of material to be learned ,
. usually including a substantial interactive element
Introduction

The confluence of the latest technology as well as the most

.widely accepted language theories of the day
It can be divided into three phases of the theories that used in
:CALL

 Structural / behavioristic CALL

 Communicative CALL
 Integrative CALL

Benefits of CALL in TEFL
. Immediate feedback , providing the knowledge -1
It gives controlling on the classroom activities and practice.
.Reduce the encouragement and reinforcement
Motivation and Interest -2
Teaching in classroom can provide many ways to learn
English through computer games, animated graphics and
problem- solving techniques which can make more
interesting(Ravichandran 2000)
Individualization -3
It can allows learners to have non-sequential learning habit;
that they can decide which skills to develop
Compatible learning style -4
It provides an exciting fast drill for one learner and slow to other

Optimal use of learning time -5

Winter(1997) in Kilickaya(2007) stressed the importance of flexible learning , learning
.everywhere ,anytime and anyhow and what the learner want to learn

Error analysis -6
By using the computer it can analyze the specific mistakes that students made and being
able to self-correction

Guided and repetitive practice -7

Learners have the freedom to expression within certain bounds that programmers create ,
. such as grammar, vocabulary

Using new technologies and helping the shy student -8

The learner can experience the knowledge and share it with others
?Does the age of the teacher effect on the teaching methods

:Challenges affects on CALL

:Challenges in CALL

 CALL Learning and the teaching methods changed over time .

The need for Computers in the classroom has increase for the
studies of different learning styles.

 The impact aims to explore the different challenges that regard

to use application of CALL such as; structural CALL ,
communicative CALL, integrative CALL
 The changing world of English language teaching in the
vision of the invisible of the methods and the pragmatist ,
technologist’s vision in the new society .

 The critical analyst’s perspective and visioning the future of

ELT ;
In the 21st century there are many abilities required for using
English on the Internet and to access the goal for the specific
purposes classes which focus on various needs to work and
achieve .
 English language teachers have to perspective in the
changed and the modern technologist , social scientist
and critical analyst through the new roles of the new
technologist world.

 The variety of speakers over time with different needs

can measure to such a natural change in the learning
process.
 The teacher should learn the new forms of English
around the world that appears in a mix with other
languages , images and sound.
 The personal challenges according to Davis(2010), there are
two major kinds of computer applications utilized for
language learning:-

 The first is generic software tool such as presentations ,

word- processing software and data analysis software.
 The second are designed especially for language learning
and comes under the category of CALL.

 According to Chen(2008) he mentioned that many teachers

and learners express a negative attitude toward technology .
 Teachers and learners still face numerous pedagogical
challenges in CALL. Dewach(2002) mentioned that
the traditional use of talk and chalk , pen and paper ,
translational method , curriculum and textbooks
unsupportable to CALL and unawareness of common
pedagogical challenges for CALL in different learning
environments.
My point view
CALL is a new field in English language learning that is
relatively different from the old teaching methods .But in the
future trends there would be a new role controlling the methods
of teaching , there will be less teachers and more technology
and robots or Artificial Intelligence (AI) that have a new
. programs to perform the function of the various facilities
The different ways of searching and finding books, articles will
increase on various sources . Involvement tracking will provide
to obtain valuable data in performance and behavior in using
digital machines in or out the classroom . Also, it will help to
.understand student’s interest, abilities and learning experiences
