INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Everything that surrounds us makes up our environment. The landforms and bodies of water make up
the landscape, the mountains, and valleys, rivers and seas; the climate and weather that we experience; the
natural resources that we use of; the plant and animal that live around us. Truly, the environment is made
up of a lot of things.
The characteristics of our environment are determined by the location of our country in the globe and
on the planet where it is found. The exact geographical location of the Philippines on the world map is a
range of latitudes and longitude coordinates.
We use a globe to illustrate the location of places on Earth. A globe is a three-dimensional model
with imaginary lines called latitude(horizontal) and longitude (vertical). The combination of these lines
form a grid and the intersections of these lines at a specific location can be read as coordinates.
Can you name places on earth and where they are located? How can you locate different places on
the earth surface?
The activities in this learning material will help you find different places or countries using a
coordinate system.

COORDINATE is an arrangement of reference lines or imaginary lines on the globe. By
SYSTEM means of coordinate system the position or location of any place on Earth’s
surface can be determined and described.
Latitud
Latitudes are horizontal lines; it is progressive angular measurements north or
e south of the equator. Latitudes are imaginary lines running from east to west on the
Earth’s surface.
Lines of latitude are often referred to as parallels, this is because latitude is a
line that runs parallel to the equator and never intersects. Parallels get smaller
towards the poles than closer to the equator. Latitude is measured in degrees.

Longitud
Longitudes are vertical lines; it gives the measurements east or west of the
e Prime Meridian. Longitudes are imaginary lines running from the North Pole to the
South Pole. Lines of longitude are often referred to as meridians.
Meridians are important for setting time zones. Longitudes are measured in
equal degrees per line.
5
Equato
An imaginary line dividing the earth’s surface into two
r hemispheres; Northern Hemisphere (half of the globe from equator to
North Pole) and Southern Hemisphere (half of the globe from equator to
South Pole).
Equator is located at zero degree (0º). With the Equator as the
reference point, the North Pole lies at 90°N and the South Pole lies at
90°S.

Prime Meridian
SLIDESMANIA.COM - Jennifer Leban &

An imaginary line dividing the earth’s surface into two

hemispheres; Western Hemisphere and Easter Hemisphere.
Prime meridian serves as a reference point for measuring
the distance east or west, located at zero degree (0º) at Greenwich,
England. The farthest point eastwards from the Prime Meridian is
expressed as 180°E and the farthest point westward is expressed
as 180°W.
Latitude
The reference point for latitude is the equator. The
equator is at latitude 0° (zero degree). Starting from the
equator going northward the lines of latitude measures 15°N
(fifteen degrees north), 30°N, 45°N, 60°N, 75°N, and 90°N
(North Pole) with equal measurement of 15° per line.
Based on the figures above, the globe does not show
all lines of latitude. If you are going to look for 50°N, in
which lines of latitude you should look? If you think
between 45°N and 60°N, then you are right.
Moreover, starting from the equator going southward
the lines of latitude measures 15°S (fifteen degrees south),
SLIDESMANIA.COM - Jennifer Leban &

30°S, 45°S, 60°S, 75°S, and 90°S (South Pole) also with
equal measurement of 15° per line.
Still based on the figures above if you wish to find
20°S, in which lines of latitude you should look? If you say
between 15°S and 30°S, then you are correct.

7
Longitude
The reference point for longitude is the Prime meridian. The prime
meridian is at longitude 0° (zero degree). To the right of Prime meridian, the
longitude measures this way: 15°E (fifteen degrees east), 30°E, 45°E, 60°E,
75°E, 90°E, and so on until 180°E, while to the left of Prime meridian, the
longitude measures this way: 15°W (fifteen degrees west), 30°W, 45°, 60°W,
75°W, 90°W, and so on until 180°W. Based on the figures above, the globe
measures a total of 360° divided by 15° (degrees per line) therefore there are
24 lines of longitude, 12 longitudes for Western Hemisphere and 12 also for
Eastern Hemisphere.
Since there are equal degrees per line of longitude, if you are going
to look for 80°W, in which lines of longitude you should look? If you think
between 75°W and 90°W, then you are right. How about 122°W? You may
find it between 120°W and 135°W.
Latitude and longitude also help in determining the kind of
SLIDESMANIA.COM - Jennifer Leban &

environment a place may have, for example if a place is located in higher

latitude that place has colder temperature and may experience different
seasons, unlike places in lower latitude those places have warmer
temperature and may experience extreme weather.
However, if a place is in higher longitude in western hemisphere that
place may experience cold climate, on the other side of the hemisphere in
eastern places, may experience extreme weather like strong typhoons.

LOCATING PLACES USING
COORDINATES
When describing location, it is common to mention the city, state, or country as a location descriptor. It is also
common to talk about landmarks that may be nearby. But another way to describe location is to use reference lines to

In Grid Mapping, latitude and longitude work with a numbered grid system, like what you see when you look at graph locate a place on a map or

How to locate places using latitude and longitude?
