Nano-Biotechnology and Cosmetics

(Nanocosmetics)

Diagnosis of cutaneous malignancies
• Quantum dots modified with specific antibodies and cosmetics can be
applied on skin
• Real time visualization of cutaneous tumors
• Malignant melanomas
Treatment of hair diseases
• Treatment of Alopecia Androgenetica, and alopecia areata
• a hair problem of hair baldness
• Minoxidil is used to treat these problems
• Less effective because of its size

• Solid lipid nanoparticles, neutral liposomes with minoxidil

Antimicrobials and Wound healing
• Silver and gold have antimicrobial effects

• Bound to bacterial enzymes and DNA

• Cause cell wall and cell membrane demage

 NANOSILVER PARTICLES:

• Cosmetic manufacturers are attracted

towards antibacterial properties of
Nano silver particles.
• They are used in producing deodorants
with silver that will provide up to 24-
hour antibacterial protection.
 NANOGOLD PARTICLES:

• Nano-sized gold is claimed to be highly effective

in disinfecting the bacteria in the mouth.
• It breaks the walls of Mycobacterium, that
makes it useful of the treatment of tuberculosis.
• Gold nanoparticles are considered to have anti-
inflammatory, anti-aging and anti-wrinkle
properties.
• It has also been added to toothpaste.
Nanoparticles as UV light filters
• Sun screens are widely used for this purpose
• Zinc Oxide and Titanium oxide are main constituents of sun screens

• Conventional sun screens appear greasy on skin and are less effective
• Sun screens made of nanoparticles of ZnO and TiO2 are
• Transparent
• Less smelly
• Less greasy
• More aesthetic and attractive
TOXIC EFFECT OF Zinc oxide and titanium oxide

• Cellular toxicity of zinc oxide and titanium oxide nanoparticles:

• Zinc oxide is stable in sunlight and can provide greater protection from UV rays
than titanium oxide.
• But zinc oxide used in sunscreen can penetrate the cells and damage the stem cells
in the brain of mice

• Toxicity depend upon dose of zinc oxide not on size of nanoparticle:

• Scientists prepared cultures of neural stem cells and treated with zinc oxide
nanoparticles
• After 24 hours, by cell viability essay it was shown that toxicity depend upon the
dose but not on size of nanoparticles.
• Many of the cells show apoptosis due to dissolved zinc ions in the culture medium
or inside of the cells.
Nanoparticles in anti-wrinkle products
• Wrinkling is caused by
• Age
• Pollution
• excessive use of chemicals on skin
• lack of nutrients
• Stress and
• over exposure to the sun

• Main effect is on collagen

• If collagen looses its elasticity, wrinkles appear on the skin

• L’Oreal
• Ravtalift (Pro-retinol A)

• Lancome
• Hydra Zen
FRONT-RUNNING BRANDS OF
NANOCOSMETICS:

• Almost all the major cosmetic manufacturers use nanotechnology

in their various products.
• L'Oréal, the world's largest cosmetics company, is using dozens of
“nanosome particles”.
• Cosmetics giant Estee Lauder entered the Nano Market with a range of
products containing “Nanoparticles”.
• Other examples include Freeze 24/7, DDF
(Doctor's Dermatologic Formula), and Colorescience.
TYPES OF NANOMATERIALS USED IN COSMETICS:
TYPES OF NANOMATERIALS USED IN COSMETICS:

 LIPOSOMES:
• Liposomes are concentric bilayer vesicles composed of natural or synthetic phospholipids which are
GRAS (generally regarded as safe) products.

• These are artificially prepared and used as carriers

for the transdermal delivery

• NanoVec, company preparing liposomal products used as cosmetics,

• 84 different products of liposomes
• Lip-1 to lip-84

• Other examples of such vesicles are

transferosomes, niosomes and ethosomes.
 NANO-EMULSIONS:

• They are dispersions of nanoscale droplets of one liquid

within another containing metastable system.
• Improve stability and suitability and
also increase the shelf life of the product.

 NANO-CAPSULES:
• Sub-microscopic particles made of a polymeric capsule Nano-emulsion
surrounding an aqueous or oily core. technology
• Use of nano-capsules decreases the penetration of UV filter in
pig skin.
 SOLID LIPID
NANOPARTICLES:
• Oily lipid droplets, solid at body temperature and stabilized
by surfactants which can protect them from degradation.
• UV-resistant properties by the use of a good UV absorber.
 PENETRATION OF NANOPARTICLES VIA SKIN:

• Nanoparticles can penetrate skin, especially if skin is flexed or broken.

Acne, eczema and wounds may enhance the absorption of nanoparticles
into the blood stream and lead to further complications.
• Carriers are being modified in order to enhance the skin penetration by
incorporating certain penetration enhancers, both physical and
chemical, and also by preparing newer vesicular systems with increased
skin penetrability like ethosomes and transferosomes.
• Even flexing and massage can increase the skin penetration of
nanoparticles.
• One study found that even particles up to 1000 nm in size can be taken up
through intact skin to reach living cells, when skin is flexed.
• It may be harmful as well as useful for drug delivery.
ROUTE AND EXTENT OF EXPOSURE:

• Health risk of nanoparticle on human depend upon route and extent of

exposure to such material.
• Nanomaterials enter the body mainly through 3 routes:
• Inhalation
• Ingestion
• Through skin
