As metal is a hard and durable material, it is used extensively in the false ceiling. When the metal surface is polished it
gives a shiny surface which is a treat for eyes.
The metals used in this are galvanized iron and aluminum. The cost of this ceiling are low as they are easy to install
and access. The hidden members of the structure are easily accessed as the panels are easily removable and reattached.
The construction cost becomes less as the installation, fixing and maintained is low.

 TYPES OF CEILINGS :-

I. Exposed Ceilings :- Exposed ceilings are also known as open ceilings or open plenums. In this type of ceiling,
all the structural and MEP systems are left exposed, either with their normal colors or painted. Open ceilings are
gaining popularity in almost every field: this architectural trend gives an industrial look, while making rooms more
spacious thanks to the increase in height. Exposed ceilings provide several advantage

• Increased natural lighting with skylights

• Modern interior designs
• Extra space

II. Suspended Ceilings :-Suspended ceilings are sometimes referred to as dropped ceilings or false ceilings. As
their name implies, they are suspended from the structure above, usually a roof or slab. This creates a space between
the underside of the structure and the upper surface of the ceiling. The following are some of the main advantages of
suspended ceilings.

• Concealing ductwork, pipes and wires

• Easy and quick installations
• Sound proofing
• Easy installation of electrical components
• A suspended ceiling can hide building issues

Brief :- Type of materials used:- Thermocal sheets, thermocol stripes. Types of elements and how is
constructed:- Thermocol contains an important thermoplastic compound, called polystyrene which is obtained by
the polymerisation of styrene or phenylethene.

The chemical properties of phenylethene are identical to polyethene. It responds very slowly to bacterial
decomposition in the soil, thus making the soil infertile.

 Fibre/mineral false ceiling are also known as acoustic or soundproofing ceiling for their sound and heat insulation
properties which are achieved by mixing natural and synthetic material such as bitumen, tars, vegetables fibres , wood
and stones. Because of the reinforcements , finer ceiling tiles acquire toughness, hardness and resistance to fire making
them highly suitable for commercial applications in noisy places such as shopping malls, retail showrooms and
offices.
Textured fibre false ceiling
 Fibre false ceiling are
gaining popularity in
commercial applications
because they are available at

GLASS FALSE CEILING
BY:- NANDANI DOSHI [1834003007]
MAYANK GOHIL [1934003013]
JAYKISHAN PANCHANI [1934003006]
Types of materials used:-
• One of the type of false ceiling used in construction are of glass. It is a non-crystalline material with the property of
brittle and transparent. But this can be altered to make it non brittle and non-transparent using some admixtures.
• As glass is a good insulator of heat, it can be used for false ceiling. This type of false ceiling improves aesthetical
appearance of the building.

21
Image sources :- indiamart.com
Types of elements

• Being a non-crystalline but transparent material, glass is a good material to work with for improving the aesthetics
of a false ceiling. Due to its brittle nature, it has limited uses but the brittleness can be reduced by adding suitable
additives. Their transparency can be used effectively to make small spaces look bigger. Glass ceiling panels can be a
suitable roofing solution in establishments such as libraries, restaurants, book stores and jewellery shops. Glass is
susceptible to design elements such as colouring, laminating and patterning. Besides, glass is a good heat insulator.

22
 How it constructed / methods ?

• Once the insulation panels are installed, you are now readyto install the false ceiling. Begin in a corner and install the first ceiling
panel using 25mm plasterboard screws spaced at intervals of 20cm. Do not let the panel touch the wall, but leave an 8mm
expansion gap between the edge of the panel and the wall. Complete one length of a room before attaching the next row of
ceiling panels.
• •When you reach the end of the row, you may need to cut and reduce the length of the ceiling panel. To do this, first measure the
space and mark it on the panel. Score the surface of the panel along this line with a hobby knife. The two parts can then be
broken apart. You will then need to cut through the cardboard backing. Use this method to also cut out sections where lights are
to be installed. When beginning a new row, you could either use the remainder of this panel or a fresh panel.

INTRODUCTION AMIT PRAJAPATI [2035003001]

• WOODEN CEILING IS USED AS PRIMARY WLL AS SECONDARY .

• PRIMARY : ROOF STRUCTURE

• SECONDARY : FALSE CEILING

• IT IS USED BOTH FOR PROVIDING ROOFING AND AESTHETICAL

• PURPOSE IN A BUILDING .

• IT CAN BE USED BOTH FOR DOMESTIC AND COMMERCIAL PURPOSE .

TYPES OF CEILING

• Drop ceiling

• Plank ceiling (tongue and groove)

• Coffered ceiling

• Suspended ceiling

• Plein wooden ceiling

25
Drop ceiling
• A drop ceiling has two parts : drop panels and a suspended metal grid, which hangs below an existing ceiling
.

Plank ceiling
• .Tongue and groove ceilings look like real wood and can be attached directly to a existing ceiling or inserted
into a suspended grid system .

Coffered ceiling
• Coffered ceiling are formed with recessed panels surrounded by dropped beams that create a grid pattern .It’s
a classic ceiling design from greek and roman architecture.

Suspended ceiling
• A non structural ceiling suspended below the over head structural slab or from the structural elements of a
building and not bearing onto the walls is know as suspended ceiling .

Plein ceiling
• A drop ceiling has two parts : drop panels and a suspended metal grid, which hangs below an existing ceiling.

Advantages
• Provides decorative and artistic look to the room.
• Provides better insulation .
• It is popular and gives a warm feeling to the room
• It is stylish in design .

Disadvantages
• It is very expensive .
• It is more prone to termite attack.
• It has weak difficult structure .
• It is difficult to clean

26
Benefits
•Absorbs sound: As wood is a porous material, it functions as a natural acoustic absorbent. You can also opt for sound-
absorbing acoustic panels to control reverberation of noise in the room.

•Energy saving: A wooden false ceiling reduces the amount of space that needs to be cooled down using an air conditioner, thus
reducing the energy consumption. Moreover, wood is a heat insulator, so your room remains cool for longer.

•Strength: If you’re planning to install lights in your false ceiling, opt for a wooden design. With this, you can install more
lights without fear that the ceiling will sag.

•Easy installation and removal: Of different types of false ceiling materials, wood is among the easiest to install and remove.
If you are opting for wooden ceiling panels, the wooden planks can be installed and dismantled with ease.

•Choice of finishes: Wooden false ceilings give you a wide choice of finishes, from glossy to matte and textured finishes. You
can also choose from laminate, veneer, and other natural varnished wood.

•Eco-friendly: If you’re environmentally conscious, this is a major point in favour of wooden false ceilings. Once removed,
they will decay naturally, causing little damage

How to install a wooden false ceiling?

To kick-start the process of building a wooden false ceiling, build a frame that accommodates the structure planned. Mark
out the desired height of your ceiling design from the floor along the walls and add wooden struts to support the structure.
You can then install the wooden panels and use your choice of paints and finishes to complete the look. Remember to leave
adequate space to prevent the panels from touching walls. Also make sure that there are cavities to install lights at optimal
distances

27
Good reasons why you should install a wood false ceiling in a room:

•Sound absorption: installing a wood false ceiling offers great acoustic advantages because it gives us
the opportunity to use sound-absorbent wood acoustic panels. These wood panels are ideal for controlling
reverberation in room effectively and discreetly.

•Hiding wires: one of the main reasons why one uses a false ceiling is that it allows you to hide cables and
pipes for different types of installations (electrical, fibre, thermal conditioning, etc.).

•Removability: another great advantage of installing a wood false ceiling is that it is easily removed or
disassembled for ready access to any cable or device located inside and needing to repairs. It also makes it
possible to quickly replace damaged panels.

•Wide variety of finishes: the wood false ceiling manufactured by Spigotec, the division of Spigogroup
which manufactures its false wood ceiling line, has a vast catalogue with numerous options and
combinations of finishes in melamine, natural varnished wood, lacquers, laminates CPL, HPL, etc.

•Impact resistance and fire and humidity reaction: the Spigotec wood false ceiling is designed for
maximum wear resistance and also, depending on the needs of each project, it can also be made with
materials having specific fire and humidity reaction characteristics.

•Energy savings: by lowering the ceiling of a room, one reduces the amount of cubic meters of air
requiring conditioning, while the air space between the wood false ceiling and original ceiling provides
heat and sound insulation.

Advantages of Gypsum Board:- board panels installed on walls or ceilings can have a number of notable advantages:

1. Versatility Various element designs of architectural requirements can easily be achieved with gypsum board. Due to
primary qualities such as performance, availability, ease of application, ease of repair, and their adaptability in all forms
of decoration; gypsum boards are incomparable to any other surfacing products.

2. Ease of Installation Installation process of drywall or gypsum wallboard is much faster & easy. They are available in
lengths of 8, 10, or 12 feet and in width of 48 inches so best known to cover the large area of either drywall or ceiling
compared to other materials. They can be cut with either knife or a saw. During the installation process, only a few tools
are required as it can be attached with a variety of fasteners, which includes nails, screws and staples. Gypsum board
sheets are lightweight materials so they can also be adhesively attached to many surfaces. Due to light weight and large
sizes available only few workers can handle the panels so labour cost gets decreased.

3. Fire Resistance They are proven to be outstanding fire-resistive building material. Their non-combustible core
restraints chemically combined water around 21%, as a result, when heat is high it releases steam. Consequently, where
fire resistance classification is required, it is the most commonly used interior finish. The study shows that steam will
not exceed 100 degree Celsius providing under normal atmospheric pressure. This characteristic helps in retarding the
transfer of heat and spread of fire. Research conducted by gypsum board manufacturer in accordance with ASTM E 84
shows that it has a low flame-spread index and a low smoke-density index. This means gypsum board adequately
protect other structural elements from fire for certain period of times.

4. Sound Isolation Installing gypsum board on drywalls & ceilings effectively help in controlling sound transmission.
The designer of the building should consider the intended activities of the occupants, for instance, office space adjacent
to manufacturing unit needs more noise reduction features than the ordinary buildings. Hence, installing gypsum board
system can be a key consideration in preventing the transfer of unwanted sound and noise to adjoining areas.

5. Durability High-quality walls constructed with gypsum boards can be recognised as drywall. They can also be used in
ceilings and they provide excellent dimensional stability and durability. Gypsum board can be easily decorated and
refinished. 31
6. Economy They are readily available in various sizes & easy to apply either on wall or ceiling. It is relatively cheap
wall surfacing & ceiling covering material that provides a fire resistant interior finish. Installation/ labour cost for the
whole building system is comparatively low, which makes this system more preferable.

Disadvantages of Gypsum Board:-

Maintaining temperature for both the mechanical & adhesive application of gypsum board is a bit of hassle. It is not
mandatory however always read the manufacturer manual for maintaining temperature during joint treatment, texturing &
decoration. Always maintain adequate ventilation during installation and curing period in the working area. Where
exposure to moisture is extreme or continuous, never use gypsum board on that area. Exposing gypsum board at high
temperature for extended periods is high.
