SUBTOPIC – MHADA (Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority )

HISTORY -
• The basic objective of the Housing Authority was to uplift the standard of living of the last section of the
society.
• Maharashtra Housing Board was formerly called "Bombay Housing Board",
• Later the Bombay Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board was constituted under the Bombay Building
repairs and Reconstruction Board act, 1969.
• To provide basic amenities such as potable water taps , drainage, path ways street lights and public toilets,
the Maharashtra Slum Improvement Board was constituted in 1971.
• To integrate the activities and functions performed by these statutory bodies, and to provide for a
comprehensive and coordinated approach to the problem of housing, the Maharashtra Housing & Area
Development Authority (MHADA) was established by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Act,
1976.
• Regional Boards were established in the state –
1) Pune housing and Area Development Board, 2)Aurangabad housing and Area Development Board,
3)Nashik housing and Area Development Board, 4)Nagpur housing and Area Development Board, and5)
Amravati housing and Area Development Board.
• Later through a special government order on 10th February 1989 Konkan housing and Area Development
Board was constituted under the housing Authority.
• Today MHADA is the Apex organization coordinating and controlling the activities of its seven Regional
Housing Boards.
• MHADA has constituted three local Area planning Authorities , one each for Chandrapur , Sholapur and
Dharavi respectively for G/North ward of Brihan Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
STRUCTURE OF MHADA –
• Under the MHADA Act, 1976 the Authority is constituted of a President, a Vice President and five non-
official Members all appointed by the State Government.
• The Secretary to Government in the Housing Department and the Urban Development Department are Ex-
officio Members of the Authority.
• The Authority is required to meet at least once in two months.
• The Divisional Commissioner, the Municipal Commissioners except for Mumbai and Deputy Director of
Town Planning are also ex-offico members of the Housing Boards.
• In order to discharge the duties assigned to various sections and maintain smooth functioning of the
Department, Chief Vigilance & Security Officer, Chief Engineer (I)/(II); Secretary, Finance Controller, Deputy
Chief Executive Officer, Legal Adviser and Chief Architect and Planner are assisting to Chief Executive
Officer & Vice President, MHADA in his day to day work

SALIENT FEATURES OF BDD PROJECT-
• Carpet area = 500 sq.ft. ( Hall, kitchen, 2 bed rooms, w. c . and bath)
• Lift, stretcher lift, fire fighting system, parking facility
• Waste water treatment plant (WTP) ; Sewage treatment plant (STP); Organic waste Converter (OWC)
• Rain water harvesting ; Solar energy facility
• Recreational ground
• Play ground
• School ; convenience shopping ; Dispensary.
