MISALIGNMENT
Tracks of a misaligned deep groove Tracks of a misaligned deep groove
ball bearing with rotating inner ring ball bearing with rotating outer ring
CAUSES
Vibrations in stationary machines leading to
micro motion between rolling elements and
raceways.
When the bearing isn’t turning, an oil film
cannot be formed to prevent raceway wear .
REMEDIES
Eliminate or absorb external vibration.
Use lubricants containing antiwear additives.
CAUSES
Heavy electrical heat loads
Inadequate heat paths
Insufficient cooling or lubrication when loads
and speed are excessive
REMEDIES
Thermal or overload controls.
Adequate heat paths
Supplemental cooling
CAUSES
Poor support of the rings in the bearing housing
REMEDIES
Improvement in bearing mounting.
Follow FAG mounting instructions for appropriate
recommendations
CAUSES
Rolling elements slide on the raceways when the
load is low and lubrication is poor.
Occasionally occurs if load zones are too short,
causing rolling elements to brake in the unloaded
zone and accelerate again when entering the load
zone.
Fast changes in speed
REMEDIES
Select Bearing with lower load carrying
capacity.
Preload Bearings, Reduce Bearing Clearance,
Improve Lubrication.

Bearing Damages - Causes and Remedies
SYMPTOMS
A wear path not parallel to raceway edges on MISALIGNMENT
the raceway of the non-rotating ring.
CAUSES
Bent shafts.
Burrs or dirt on shaft or housing shoulders.
Shaft threads that are not square with shaft seats.
Locking nuts with faces that are not square to
the thread axis
REMEDIES
Inspect shafts and housings for runout of
shoulders and bearing seats.
Use single point- turned or ground threads on
non-hardened shafts and ground threads only on
hardened shafts.
Use precision grade lock nut’s.

Bearing Damages - Causes and Remedies
SYMPTOMS
A heavy rolling element wear path in the bottom TIGHT FITS
of the raceway
CAUSES
Excessive loading of the rolling elements when
interference fits exceed the radial clearance at
operating temperatures.
REMEDIES
Decrease total interference with better matching
of bearings to shafts and housings.
Avoid grazing
REMEDIES
Replace the bearing and/or consider redesigning
to use a bearing with a greater calculated
fatigue life

Bearing Damages - Causes and Remedies
CAUSES
Static overload of the bearing, Severe impact to the
bearing
Using a hammer to install the bearing.
Dropping or striking assembled equipment.
Pressing a bearing to the shaft by applying force to
the outer ring.
SYMPTOMS
CONTAMINATION
Denting of rolling elements and raceways,
causing vibration.
vibration
CAUSES
Denting of rolling elements and raceways,
causing vibration.
REMEDIES CONTAMINATION
Denting of rolling elements and raceways,
causing vibration.
Clean work areas, tools, fixtures and hands
reduce the risks
Isolate bearing assembly area from any grinding
operations.
SYMPTOMS
Discolored rolling elements (blue/brown) and LUBRICANT
rolling element tracks. FAILURE
Excessive wear of rolling elements, rings, and
cages follow, resulting in overheating and
catastrophic failure.
CAUSES
Restricted lubricant flow.
CAUSES
Exposing bearings to corrosive fluids or
atmospheres
REMEDIES
Divert corrosive fluids away from bearing areas
CAUSES
Constant passage of alternating or direct current
REMEDIES
Prevent currents from flowing through the
bearing by means of grounding or insulating.
CAUSES
Excessive loading of the bearing
REMEDIES
Reduce the load
CAUSES
Axial load unacceptably high.
REMEDIES
Ensure good lip support design.
CAUSES
Sparking over current for example during
welding or due to earth failure.
REMEDIES
Do not direct the current through the bearing
during Electro welding
SYMPTOMS ROLLING
In case of balls ,arch shaped notches on the
surface or described as ‘woolen balls’ of ELEMENT EDGE
notches, edges rounded since they are plastically RUNNING
deformed . See fig 1 & 2. These are not to be
confused with scratches by foreign particles.
Circumferential notches near the face in case of
rollers.
CAUSES Fig1
Excessive (Axial Load).Tilting.
Moment Load too High.
Operating Clearance too high.
REMEDIES
Avoid Overloading. Avoid Tilting
Use bearing with higher load carrying capacity.
Reduce operating clearance. Fig2

TRACKS
Improve lubricant supply.
Use lubricant with a suitable viscosity & appropriate
additives.
Use bearing parts with surface coating.

SYMPTOMS
OVERHEATING
Raceway/rolling elements plastically deformed to
a large extent.
Discolourisation of the bearing.
CAUSES
Bearing clearance too low during operation,
particularly with high speed bearings.
Inadequate lubrication.

Over lubrication.
Impeded running due to cage fracture.
REMEDIES
OVERHEATING
Increase bearing clearance, Avoid lubrication
pile up- Improve lubrication.
In the case of external heating ensure,
sufficiently slow heating up and cooling down,
that is to ensure uniform heating of the complete
bearing.
