• Defense mechanisms are psychological strategies that are unconsciously
used to protect a person from anxiety arising from unacceptable thoughts
or feelings.
• Purpose- to protect the mind/self/ego from anxiety

• IDENTIFICATION
• SUBLIMATION

RATIONALISATION

• Face saving device by which an individual justifies his short comings,


failure and incompetence by giving false reason
• Two common forms
 Sour grapism: some thing we cannot becomes something we did not want
anyway
 Sweet lemonism: attitude that already achieved is better than something
that is usually considered more desirable by others.

AGGRESSION
Projection
• It is a device where one attributes his/her thoughts to another person
• Blaming others
WITHDRAWAL
• Removing onself from events ,stimuli, or interaction that could remind
one of painful thoughts and feelings
• EXAMPLE
• You are overly anxious ,so you protect your self by going to sleep
• You feel deeply depressed , you try to protect yourself by staying in the
room all day
• Day dreaming
Compensation
• Encountering failure or frustration in some sphere of activity , one over
emphasizes another
• This is also called subsitutuion
• Process of overcorrecting for a handicap or limitation
NEGATIVISM

• Active refusal to carry out request.


• Persons develop strong and irrational resistance in accepting the
suggestion of others.
• Foundation- laid in early childhood and reflects during adult hood
• They resist suggestion,exhibit rebellious behavior doing the opposite of
what is normally expected .
Aggression

• Refers to forceful attacking activity that can be in the form of either


physical,verbal or symbolic or all the three.
• Arises from frustration where the individual attempts to hurt or destroy
the source of frustration
• Two types :EXTRAPUNITIVE
• INTRAPUNITIVE
