Listening & speaking
0 We may often think that, having good communication skills is
all about the ability to speak well…..
Or all about “SPEAKING.”

We are right……
But only 50% right.
Because….
Verbal Communication has another very important part…… “LISTENING”.

“Speaking” + “Listening” = “Verbal Communication.”

Listening
0 Most of the successful people I've known are the ones who
do more listening than talking. Bernard M. Baruch
0 Includes sympathetic & Empathetic listening

Speaking
‘To speak’ and ‘to speak well’ are two things.  A fool may talk,
but a wise man speaks.  ~Ben Johnson

The words you choose to say something are just as important as

the decision to speak.  ~Author Unknown
Types of verbal communication
 Oral - consists of all spoken exchanges
Casual conversations among friends as well as political
debates fall into this category
Verbal feedback typically follows initial message whether in
form of a question or comment
 Written – Another form; requires no speech
Written communication commonly falls under umbrella of
verbal communication for use of words to convey ideas
Books, letters, email, texts, memos, magazines, newspapers
& personal journals are all examples of verbal
communication

• Official corporate communications such as meetings,
speeches, conferences, letters & memorandums, Legal
documents & court proceedings

Advantages

Disadvantages
Advantages
 Saving of Time- messages are communicated immediately without consuming
any time. It is the only way out during urgent condition & when immediate
action is necessary
 Saving of Money- As there is no formal method of communicating message, no
help of any particular media of communication is taken; saves a lot of money
 More Effective- As there is direct touch of sender of message with receiver of
message these messages prove to be more effective. Sender of message can also
exercise his personal influence over receiver of message
 Knowledge of Reaction of Message- sender of message can judge reaction of
message on its receiver (whether receiver of message will follow it or not)
 Clear Doubts- any doubts regarding message between sender & receiver of
message can immediately be cleared & receiver of message can immediately get
explanations regarding any point or message
 Increase in Productivity and Efficiency- Verbal communication is more
effective. It increases productivity & efficiency of workers because they clearly
understand it & follow it
Disadvantages
 Lack of Proof of Message- greatest disadvantages; there is no proof of the
message communicated
 Not Suitable for Future Reference- As there is nothing in writing supporting
messages communicated. If there is any dispute on any point of message, it
cannot be helped in any way
 Not Suitable in Case of Distance- as it will increase cost of communication &
not be effective because of lack of personal touch & it may not be clear &
explanatory
 It can be quickly forgotten
 Poor presentation of message or instruction can result in misunderstanding &
wrong responses
