The allocation for Education is ৳71592 crore (US$8.5 billion), an 11.9% increase.
The education budget for 2021-22, is 11.9 percent of the entire national budget. This
amounts to 2.08 percent of the GDP. Compared to the last year’s allocation of 2.09 percent of
the GDP, this year’s education budget is slightly reduced.
The education budget for the financial year 2020-21 was Tk 66,401 crore among which only
56,000 is spent yet.
South Asian countries spend on average four percent of their GDP on education, below the
world average of 4.8 percent. India spends 4.6 percent, Afghanistan and Maldives 4.1
percent, Nepal 5.2 percent and Bhutan a staggering 6.6 percent of their entire GDP on
education.
The current government’s narrative of development and boasting about high GDP growth is
indeed short-term infrastructural development rather than long term nation-building — both
philosophically and in terms of skills.
