Introduction
Modern communication
technologies when applied to
conditions in rural areas can help
to improve communication,
increase participation,
disseminate information and
share knowledge and skills.
MUltimedia
• It can be defined as the integration of two or
more media elements with computing
technology to convey information.
Multimedia is a woven combination of
 text
 graphic
 art
 sound,
 animation
 video elements.
It refers to use of more than one medium
Multimedia requirements
• Hardware devices
• computer hardware
• software
A presentation involving audio and video clips would be considered a
"multimedia presentation."
Educational software that involves animations, sound, and text is
called "multimedia software."
CDs and DVDs are often considered to be "multimedia formats" since
they can store a lot of data and most forms of multimedia require a
lot of disk space.
Application in multimedia in Extension
• Instructing the famers for
problem solving.
• Diffusing the Innovations
• Helps to increase the retention
of what is learnt.
Interactive Multimedia
Any computer-delivered electronic
system that allows the user to
control, combine, and manipulate
different types of media, such as
text, sound, video, computer
graphics and animation .
Different forms:
• IMCD
• ICVT
• IVD
When you allow an end user - the viewers of a multimedia project to
control what elements are delivered and it is interactive multimedia.

Interactive multimedia has been
called a "hybrid technology."
It combines the
storage and retrieval
capabilities
viewing and manipulating
Features
• Package of materials.
• Packaged, integrated, and linked together.
• Interactive multimedia is always "reader-centered”.
• we can hyperlink other related documents.

Example
A personal computer (PC)
system with conventional
magnetic-disk memory storage
technically qualifies as a type of
interactive multimedia.
CD_ROMs
• Special laser based information
storage media.
• Compressed and compacted,
• Retrieve information.
• only read not written and also
cannot add new information .
Elements of CD-Rom
Computer
CD-Rom device (read the
database)
Uses
• It has enormous storage capacity( a single disc can store information
equivalent to three lakhs pages).
• So it become popular in library.
• Information can easily search through CD-Rom
• Book in print, full Text documents and other research information is
coming in CD- ROM.
• Publishing of CD-ROM is also possible, mainly because of growing market
for CD-ROM products.
• In extension, the information required for field extension units can be
obtained from CD-ROM and copies can be distributed.
CD - ROM vs. Books
Point of CD- ROM Books
Differentiation
Cost High Low
storage Capacity More Less
(Enormous
storage capacity
)
Navigation Easy Difficult
Disadvantages of Textbook
• Text book is multimedia
• But there is unable to make
hypertext
• It can only be arranged in one
order
• Unable to navigate
• constraints of size and
practicality.
What is the solution?
Imagine a history textbook in
electronic form, constructed as a
work of hypermedia: how would
that work be different from a
printed text?
Interactive Multimedia compact disc
The most common multimedia machine consists of a PC with a digital
speaker unit and a CD_ ROM (compact disc read-only memory) drive,
which optically retrieves data and instructions from a CD-ROM.
It is one of the most versatile audio visual medium of
communication.
Quick, accurate, efficient, cheaper.
It is suitable to demonstrate complex and dynamic process.
It has the capacity to deliver large amounts of materials multiple
forms
It allows user to control the reading and viewing Experience.
Use of IMCD
• Reduce volume of paper
• Picture and video can be added
• Access through new media
• User friendly
Drawbacks
• File security becomes more
difficult
• Hardware cost is high.
• leads to infringement
Conclusion
• There is need to have ideal blend of modern IT with traditional
extension approaches for effective and efficient transfer system.
• Further as per popular saying, “One cannot employ Yesterday’s
method today and be in the business tomorrow”.
• Hence, combination of traditional extension approach, modern
information technology blends with integrated approach to be
worked out to achieve higher farm production and productivity.
