WYEFIELD CAMPUS

BY EMILY JAMES
WYEFIELD CAMPUS

 Main character's, Mia and Chloe, go exploring around the abandoned wing of their aging college campus in order
to pass the time of the school day away. When they come across a door that seems to be the only one that is open
Mia is eager to explore while Chloe is skeptical of danger, rightly so, as the girls have no idea what kind of danger
they have entered. After a small scare from their friend Lulu the girls think they are in the clear from danger,
however when they try to leave they are faced with the realization that the darkness as taken over…
NORWICH FILM FESTIVAL

 I created this short film for Norwich Film Festival as it seemed like the best option for me.
 There were many things that lead me to chose this film festival, for example; it has an entry option specifically for
student films, the entry price is affordable, it is eligible for BAFTA and BIFA nominations and the deadlines
correspond with the deadline set by the college.
PRODUCTION

 Here is a short teaser clip from my production!

PLATFORM

 I will be posting my production on YouTube as it has an extraordinarily wide audience and a vast span of viewers.
 YouTube allows people to watch my production without ad interruption and costs them nothing to watch.
 YouTube is also a very easy site to access and use.
TARGET AUDIENCE

 I used my target audience to find out things like what genders they would like to see in my production, how long they
wanted it to be, what kind of styles and technical ideas they wanted to see. This research really helped me to shape my
production.
 For example, my target audience helped me decided whether I wanted to use a visible entity or if I wanted to use more of a
trickster, poltergeist spirit to haunt the characters. Or whether I wanted my production to be a radio drama or short film.
IDEA GENERATION

 Creating my ideas was a tricky process, I began with two very similar ideas that leant towards more of a
crime/mystery/drama genre and my third idea of a horror radio drama.
 After talking to my focus group, I then decided to produce a horror radio drama.
 Next, I sent out a survey to peers in my focus group and discovered that the radio drama would be even more
appealing to them if it were produced as a short film.
WHAT I TOOK FROM MY RESEARCH

 After talking with my focus group, I decided to use a non-visible spirit. So, I did research on poltergeists, which
are commonly known as mischievous spirits that create chaos.
 I also learned from my research that poltergeists tend to target adolescent women, which is why I chose to cast
Lottie Archer and Erin Sullivan as my main characters.
 From my medium research I learned that short films are often between 5 and 25 minutes long, which is why I
aimed to make my production between 5 to 10 minutes.
HOW MY IDEA ADAPTED

 Firstly, after getting initial feedback from my focus group and my target audience I decided to change my idea
from a radio drama to a short film.
 When first deciding to make my idea a short film I was going to have the antagonist as a visible entity, but I
adapted my idea into using a poltergeist spirit as I had a few ideas of how I could add plot twists and jump scares.
 After not being able to find a suitable and usable location for an abandoned house I adapted my idea to be able to
film in an available location.
