7
SCOPE OF NATUROPATHY

▫ With rising environmental pollution, the incidence of

respiratory disease is increasing in India, particularly
among children..
▫ It is important therefore to introduce a holistic approach
towards the management of this condition through the use
of naturopathy and yoga

8
Naturopathy
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
▫ Improves lung compliance • Improve depth of breathing
▫ Enhances gaseous exchange • Improve immunity

14
FACIAL STEAM

Hot humid air from Facial

▫ Increases nasal mucus temperature
▫ Inhibits chemical secretion
▫ Decreased nasal obstruction
▫ Reduced leakage
▫ Increase moistness of mucus plug

Journal of Allergy and Immunology, [online] Available at: <https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31175716/>.

15
ASTHMA BATH

▫ Short peripheral vasoconstriction (long continuous rubbing and warm

water application)
▫ Followed by long vasodilation In periphery (Sudden splashing of cold
water)
▫ Blood directed towards vital organs
▫ Cold receptor travels to sympathetic ganglia Sympathetic arousal-
adrenaline bind with Beta adrenergic receptor- bronchodilation

ARM AND FOOT BATH

▫ 33 year old male admitted with wheezing and dyspnea, K/C/O

Asthma with occasional use of inhalers
▫ Spirometry - obstructive pattern (Fev1=1.6L to 2.02L)
▫ 3 days of hot arm and foot bath – 20 minutes (40+_2 degree)

17
▫ RESULT
⬝ FEV1/FVC= increased ratio by 67% (from 56%)
REASON
1. Reduce mucus accumulation and alleviates bronchospasm
2. Increase heat dissipation (Hot treatments)- perspiration and lung
activity
3. Palms and soles- reflex areas

Maheshkumar, K., Pandiaraja, M., Venugopal, V., Poonguzhali, S., & Sundareswaran, L. (2020). Effects of hot foot
and arm bath in bronchial asthma: A single case report. The Foot, 42, 101651.

18
SAUNA BATH

▫ Reduces risk of respiratory diseases

▫ Reduces Oxidative stress
▫ Direct effect on lung tissue- reduces congestion and increases tidal
volume
▫ Improves airway obstruction

Greco, F. A. (2021). How Does Sauna Bathing Improve Respiratory Tract Function? The American Journal of Medicine,
134(10), e541.

19
ENEMA

▫ Elimination and detoxification according to

Naturopathy
▫ Cleansing treatment of bowel
▫ Indirectly helps improve lung function.

ACUPUNCTURE
ACUPUNCTURE

▫ General points
⬝ CV 17, LU5, LU7,BL 13, BL 23, St 36, BL 43, BL 12
REASON
⬝ Relax muscles in breathing
⬝ Avoid release of chemicals(histamine) for bronchodilation

23
ACUPUNCTURE

▫ COPD patients
⬝ Zusanli (St 36), Pishu (BL 20), Feishu (Bl 13),
⬝ Dingchuan (EX B1)- Dyspnea stabilizing point (0.5 cun lateral to
GV 14)
⬝ Manually manipulated
⬝ Borg scale score- severity of symptom reduced
⬝ 6 minute walk distance (6MWD) Increased

24
ACUPUNCTURE

▫ FVC, FEV1 improvement of lung function

REASON
▫ Earth can transform metal ( 5 elemental theory)
▫ Activates spleen point- which transforms metal element
(Lung)

MANIPULATIVE THERAPY

Structural myofascial therapy + diaphragmatic release therapy

+ Osteopathic massage therapy
▫ Improved lung volume and reduced Residual volume
▫ Improve symptoms of dyspnea
▫ Improved performance of 6 minute walk distance

27
OILS FOR MASSAGE

Mustard
oil with Apricot Coconut
garlic kernel oil oil
cloves

Sesame
Castor oil Jojoba oil
oil

28
AROMATHERAPY + STEAM
▫ Anise
▫ Cedar leaf
▫ Eucalyptus
▫ Tea tree
REASON
1. Antimicrobial and Anti bacterial properties
2. Contains high levels of terpene alcohol+ aldehyde
3. Suppression of mediators histamine, neutrophil, mast cells, eosinophil

tract pathogens, using a modified dilution assay method. Journal of Infection and Chemotherapy, 7(4), 251–254.

29
DIET
WHY IS NUTRITION IMPORTANT?

▫ Body needs fuel to perform activities including breathing

▫ Good nutrition fights body infections
▫ Breathing requires more energy especially with people
with respiratory illnesses.

31
WHY IS NUTRITION IMPORTANT?

• FOOD • ENERGY
FOOD RESPIRATION
• OXYGEN • CO2

32
FOOD ACCORDING TO NATUROPATHY

Expectorant Eliminative

Soothening Mucolytic

33
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

Bronchodilators like green tea and other the herbal medicines can
provide relief
• Omega-3 found in flax seeds, can balance the
allergic/inflammatory pathways.
• Nutrients vitamins C, B6, and B12, and the minerals selenium and
molybdenum can improve respiratory health.

34
FOOD TO AVOID

▫ Carbonated beverages
▫ Fried, greasy, heavily spiced foods
▫ Apples, Avocados, Melons
▫ Beans, Broccoli, Brussel, Sprouts, Cabbage
▫ Peanuts, Artificial coloring agents, Shrimp
▫ Sodium must be controlled- Body retains too much
water- hinders breathing

35
▫ Antioxidant diet Increased nitric oxide formation

▫ Vitamin C Breaks lipid peroxidation- protects

lung from damage

▫ Vitamin E Oxidative damage reduction

▫ Magnesium Protects against inflammation and

bronchoconstriction

36
▫ Wholegrains and fibers Lowers serum CRP /IL 6/TNF
(phenolic alpha
acid/flavones/selenium)

▫ Magnesium Protects against inflammation and

bronchoconstriction

37
DOS IN NATUROPATHY FOR LUNG HEALTH

▫ Clear airway one hour before eating

▫ Eat slowly, Take small bites, Breathe deeply while
chewing
▫ Eat small 5-6 meals. This will keep your stomach from
filling up too much so your lungs have more room to
expand
▫ Drinking water in between meals may cause bloating.
▫ Sit while eating- to relieve pressure from abdomen

38
FASTING THERAPY

▫ Reduces generalized inflammation

▫ Helps increase lung volume
▫ Increase pulmonary capacity
▫ Removal of toxins
▫ Reduce body wright- Less stress on lungs
▫ Increase autophagy- improve mitochondrial respiration
