MODULE 1
THE NATURE OF MATHEMATICS
MATHEMATICS IN
THE MODERN
WORLD

What is Mathematics?
the study of the relationships among numbers, quantities,
and shapes.
enhances our critical thinking skills, reasoning, spatial
thinking and creativity.
helps organize patterns and regularities in the world.

SYMMETRY
The quality of being made up of exactly similar parts facing
each other or around an axis.
A law or operation in which a physical property or process
has an equivalence in two or more directions.
Correct or pleasing proportion of the parts of a thing.

TYPES OF SYMMETRY
Translational symmetry
Rotational symmetry
Reflexive symmetry
Glide symmetry
MATHEMATICS IN
THE MODERN
WORLD

Types of Symmetry: Translational

If an object is moved from
one position to another,
with the same orientation
in the forward and
backward motion
MATHEMATICS IN
THE MODERN
WORLD

Types of Symmetry: Rotational

When an object is rotated
in a particular direction,
around a point
MATHEMATICS IN
THE MODERN
WORLD

Types of Symmetry: Reflexive

Type of symmetry where
one half of the object
reflects the other half of
the object
AKA: Mirror Symmetry
MATHEMATICS IN
THE MODERN
WORLD

Types of Symmetry: Glide

The combination of both translation
and reflection transformations
Commutative in nature and the
change in combination’s order does
not alter the output of the glide
reflection.

Activity #1
Take a picture of an object/scenario and apply the concepts
of symmetry
Send pictures on our GC with a name on the picture itself.
You will be given 10 mins to submit your output.

Fibonacci Numbers
A series of numbers in which each number (Fibonacci number) is the
sum of the two preceding numbers. The simplest is the series
1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, etc.
Discovered by Leonardo Pisano (Italian Full Name)

Leonardo Pisano
His name means Leonardo of Pisa
He was born in Pisa, Italy around 1175
Latin term "Filius Bonacci" stands for "son of Bonaccio"
Father name: Guglielmo Bonaccio.
