2
DEFINATION

 A stroke is an emergency condition in which

neurologic deficits result from a sudden
decrease in blood flow to a localized area of
brain.
 Alternative names:cva,cerebral
infarction,cerebral hemorrhage.

3
INCIDENCE

 On an average ,someone in the United states

has a stroke every 45 seconds and dies of
stroke every 3 minutes.
 Stroke is the third leading cause of death and
leading cause of adult disability in north
America, where almost 800000 people suffer
a stroke each year.

the United States.
 Every year 600000 people will suffer a new or
recurrent stroke, and of those,160000 will die.

5
RISK FACTORS

 TIA
 CAD
 High blood pressure
 Smoking
 Heart diseases
 Diabetes
 Excessive alcohol consumption
 Family history
 Age ,sex
 Race,obesity

PATHOPHYSIOLOGY

7
TESTS

 Computed tomography(CT)
 Magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)
 Cerebral angiography : identify responsible blood
vessel
 Electrocardiogram(ECG): underlying heart
conditions
 Echocardiogram : blood clot from heart
 Carotid duplex : carotid artery stenosis
 Heart monitors , blood work and many more tests.

ISCHEMIC STROKE:

 A blood vessel becomes blocked and the

blood supply to that part of your brain is
blocked.
 Types of ischemic strokes:
 THROMBOTIC STROKE
 EMBOLIC STROKE

11
HEMORRHAGIC STROKE

 A small blood vessel in the brain becomes

weak and ruptures.
 Types of hemmorrhagic stroke :
-intracerebral hemorrhage (ich)
-subarachnoid hemorrhage.
