A. BACKGROUND
Speech is a way for someone to communicate to deliver
the sentences they want to convey with information or
meaning so others can understand. According to (Siti
Surinah Harahap, Rivi Antoni, 2015), state speech is a
set of voices uttered by one and understood by
someone else. Speech is also the ability to speak that a
person has to express themselves in various things and
situations by using language as a tool in delivering it.
For English students, speeches have a crucial role in every speaking
activity that is carried out. According to (Srinivas Rao, 2019)
speaking is deemed the most important skill in learning a foreign or
second language. However, some English students continue to
struggle when doing speeches. Even though they are in English class
almost every day, not all of them can fulfill every component of
speaking English. The difficulties they face undoubtedly impact on
their ability to deliver their speeches.
 The researcher asked two of English  Besides that, the difficulties also arise
Students’ batch 2021 informally via from psychological aspects such as
Whatsapp on February 26, 2022. they fear of making mistakes, shyness,
admitted that they had problem on anxiety, lack of confidence and
delivering their speeches such as lack in motivation. This makes the writer
mastery grammar, lack in vocabulary decide to conduct the research that
and problem in pronouncing word. focuses on identifying English student’s
difficulties in delivering speeches.

B. THEORETICAL REVIEW
 SPEAKING

According to (C. T. Mart, 2012) state speaking consists of producing systematic verbal

interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing and receiving and processing
information (Brown, 1994)

A speaker's speech is varied and serves a purpose. for example, according to
(Bloomfield & Sapir, 1922) speech that is used by each speech is so familiar a feature
2 of daily. According to (Abdullah, 2017) speech for communication is an act that has been viewed
as a process between speaker and listeners that involves productive speaking and receptive for
listening in order for conveyed message that contains information.

3. Issues on Speaking of EFL Learners

Speaking for EFL learners is not easy it requires much effort to produce acceptable utterances and
sentences in English (Abugohar et al., 2019). In the scope of education, the issues and difficulties often
occur in speaking for EFL learners, EFL learners no matter how much they know about the English language
still face many speaking difficulties (Hosni, 2014). According to Aisha (2020) there are some challenges in
speaking of EFL learners such as Fear of Making Mistakes, Shyness, Anxiety, Lack of Confidence and Lack
of Motivation.
4. Language Adversity in Spoken Language

According to (Alshami, 2019) language means of communication to conveying ideas, thoughts,


feeling, emotion and the use of language an almost infinite number of purposes. In (Rabiah,
2012) define language as communication tool used by everyone in their daily life as a means to
convey information and arguments to others. English students use a foreign language as a
communication tool in their classroom learning and practice using English outside of the
classroom. Almost everything related to speeches prioritizes the use of English.

Students who use English for spoken communication frequently face a variety of challenges
that prevent them from delivering speeches fluently, many students who had learned English
in many years still find them difficult to express their idea in oral form (Susilawati, 2017).
said by Susilawati (2018) in her study of speaking problems faced by students in
presentations using English, there are three important linguistic aspects such as lack in
vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.

D. METHODOLOGY

This research is a mixed-method research. A mixed method is a


method that focuses on data collection and analysis and combines both
quantitative and qualitative data. In addition, the researcher uses
explanatory sequential design. According to Creswell ( 2006.p72),
explanatory sequential design is a mixed-method design with two phases.
The collection and analysis data of quantitative data is first step in this
approach then collecting and analysis of qualitative data to prove and
understand the quantitative data.

The population of this research are 38 respondent, consisting C class of


second semester student in English Department Student. The sampling
technique in this research is total sampling. Total sampling is a sampling
technique when all the population are used as sample ( Sugiyono,2017).
