• The derivation of expression for force of jet on a moving

vertical plate.

M405.37 2
Objectives

After completion of this topic, the student will be able to

• Solve problems pertaining to impact of jet on moving

vertical plate

M405.37 3
Problems

Example 1:

A jet of water moving with a velocity of 25 m/sec, strikes

normally on a plate. The jet diameter is 60mm. Determine the
force on the plate when it is moving in the direction of jet with a
velocity of 5m/sec?

M405.37 4
Solution

Data :- Velocity of jet, v = 25 m/sec

Diameter of jet, d = 60 mm

Velocity of plate, u = 5 m/sec

Area of jet = (/4)d2 = (/4) (0.06)2

= 2.83 x 10-3 m2

M405.37 5
• Force on the moving plate ‘F’

= w a (V – u)2 = 9810 x 2.83 x 10-3 x (25 – 5)2

g 9.81

= 1132 N

M405.37 6
Example 2:

A jet of water moving with a velocity of 15 m/sec,

has a jet diameter of 50mm, strikes a perpendicular smooth
flat plate. Determine the force exerted by the jet on the plate
if it moves in the direction of jet with a velocity of 5m/sec.
Also determine work done and the efficiency of jet?

M405.37 7
Solution
Data :- Velocity of jet, v = 15 m/sec

Diameter of jet, d = 50 mm = 0.05m

Velocity of plate, u = 5 m/sec

= Area of jet = (/4)d2 = (/4) (0.05)2

= 1.96 x 10-3 m2

Rate of flow ‘Q’ = aV = 1.96 x 10-3 x 15

= 0.0294 m3 / sec

M405.37 8
Force exerted by jet ‘F’ = (w/g) a (V – u)2
= 9810 x 1.96 x 10-3 (15 – 5)2 = 196 N
9.81

Work done = F x u = 196 x 5 = 980 N. m/sec

Efficiency ‘η” = work done = 980

KE supplied to jet ½ [WQ/g] V2

= 980
½ [(9810 / 9.81) x 0.0294] x 152

= 29.6%
M405.37 9
Example 3 :

A jet of water impinges on a moving vertical plate with a

velocity of 35 m/sec then the plate moves with a velocity of 6 m/sec.
If the diameter of jet is 9.5 cm. find force exerted on the plate, work
done and power?

M405.37 10
Solution
Data :- Velocity of jet ‘V’ = 35 m/sec

Velocity of plate ‘u’ = 6m/sec

Diameter of jet ‘d’ = 9.5cm = 0.095m

= Area of jet = (/4)d2 = (/4) (0.095)2

= 7.08 x 10-3 m2

M405.37 11
• Force exerted on plate :-

F = w a(V–u)2 = 9810 x 7.08 x 10-3 (35 – 6)2

g 9.81

= 5954.28 N

M405.37 12
• Work done ‘W’ = Force x Velocity of moving plate

= 5954.28 x 6

= 35725.68 N. m/sec

M405.37 13
• Power ‘P’ = Work done per second

= 35725.68 Watts

= 35.7 KW
