POWER GENERATION BY
SPEED BREAKER

Objective
• The main objective of this project is to use a non-
conventional source of energy to generate electricity at
low cost.
• To provide an environmental friendly power source.
• To convert the kinetic energy of vehicle to potential
energy which can be effectively stored and used.
• In the present scenario power becomes major need for human
life. Due today-to-day increase in population and lessen of the
conventional sources, it becomes necessary that we must
depend on non-conventional sources for power generation.
• While moving, the vehicles posses some kinetic energy and it is
being wasted. This kinetic energy can be utilized to produce
power by using a special arrangement called “POWER HUMP”
• The Kinetic energy of moving vehicles can be converted into
mechanical
• Energy of the shaft through rack and pinion mechanism.
This shaft is connected to the electric generator and it
produces electrical energy proportional to traffic density.
• The generated power can be used for general purpose
like streetlights, traffic signals. The electrical output can
be improved by arranging these power humps in series
this generated power can be amplified and stored by
using different electric devices
DESCRIPTION

• In the present scenario power becomes major need for

human life.

• Due to day-to-day increase in population and lessen of

the conventional sources, it becomes necessary that we
must depend on non-conventional sources for power
generation.

• In this project we propose a renewable non-

conventional energy source based on speed breaker
mechanism.
• The kinetic energy of the moving vehicles can be
converted into mechanical energy through rack and
pinion mechanism and this mechanical energy will be
converted to electrical energy using generator which will
be used for lighting the street lights.
METHODOLOGY
The working principle of this power generation program is to
convert the kinetic energy to electric energy via mechanical
energy. This can be done when the brakes are applied upon
the vehicle kinetic energy is produced. After this the kinetic
energy is converted to mechanical energy using a rack and
pinion gear and the by connecting the pinion gear to a
generator shaft the energy is converted into electrical energy.
1. Speed Breaker:- This is a normally used thing in everyday
life. This element can be made from the composite of
carbon fibre and rubber so that the speed breaker can
sustain the heavy load of vehicles such as a container
filled with some
2. Rack and Pinion Gear :- As the name suggests this type
of gear has two components namely Rack which is a
straight gear with tooth in only one direction, the second
component is the Pinion which is a round shaped gear and
will roll upon the rack to perform its task. The alignment of
this gear will be in vertical direction.
3. Generator: – In this case the work of the generator
remains the same and for that the shaft of the generator
will have a pinion gear on its edge. The pinion gear will be
meshed with the pinion gear of Rack and Pinion
arrangement. As the first pinion gear will rotate the second
gear will also rotate with the shaft of the generator. This will
induce EMF (Electro Motive Force) in the generator and
electricity will be produced.
4. Electricity Storage: – It is very difficult to store electricity
for a long time into any kind of storage. To deal with this
issue a battery pack will be introduced which will help us
store the electric energy in to the battery pack. Also battery
packs can be useful to transfer electric energy from one
place to another.
Block Diagram
Calculations
The mass of any vehicle travelling over the speed breaker- 500 Kg
(Approximately)
Height of speed brake = 15 cm
Work done weight of the body x distance travelled by the vehicle
Here, Weight of the Body = 500 Kg x 9.81 = 4905 N
Distance traveled by the body = Height of the speed breaker = 15cm
Power = Work done/Second = (4905 x 0.15)/60 = 12.2625 Watts
Output Power developed for 1 vehicle passing over the speed
Breaker arrangement for one minute = 12.2625 watts
Power developed for 60 minutes (1 hr) = 735.75 watts
Power developed for 24 hours = 1059.48 Kw
This power generated by vehicles is more than sufficient to run five
street lights in the night time.
PROBLEM THAT WE ARE TRYING TO
SOLVE
• We are trying to save non-renewable resources i.e.
Fossil Fuels.
• As non-renewable resources cause damage to
environment and posesses a potential threat to
human health so we are trying to reduce pollution
cause due to fossil fuels.
• As non-renewable resources are much costlier and
maintenance cost is also very high, so to reduce the
maintenance cost we are using conventional
resources.
Expected Outcome

• Power generation with low cost and using non-

conventional energy sources which will help us to
conserve the conventional energy to meet the future
demand.
• Pollution free power generation.
• No need of manpower during power generation.
• According to upcoming conditions it can be helpful
for car charging station, Street light, Signal, etc.
