REAL AND COMPLEX
NUMBERS
1. How will you define real numbers?

Real numbers are simply the combination of rational and irrational

numbers, in the number system. In general, all the arithmetic operations can
be performed on these numbers and they can be represented in the number
line, also. At the same time, the imaginary numbers are the un-real numbers,
which cannot be expressed in the number line and is commonly used to
represent a complex number. Some of the examples of real numbers are 23, -
12, 6.99, 5/2, π, and so on.
2. What are rational and irrational numbers? Define with
examples.

◦ Rational and Irrational numbers both are real numbers but different with respect to their properties.
A rational number is the one which can be represented in the form of P/Q where P and Q are integers and
Q ≠ 0. The word “rational” is derived from the word ‘ratio’, which actually means a comparison of two or
more values or integer numbers and is known as a fraction. In simple words, it is the ratio of two integers.
◦ Example: 3/2 is a rational number. It means integer 3 is divided by another integer 2.

◦ But an irrational number cannot be written in the form of simple fractions. ⅔ is an example of a rational
number whereas √2 is an irrational number. Irrational numbers have endless non-repeating digits after the
decimal point. Below is an example of an irrational number:
◦ Example: √8 = 2.828
3. Differentiate terminating and non-terminating decimal
fractions.
◦ A terminating decimal is a decimal, that has an end digit. It is a decimal, which has a finite number of
digits(or terms).
◦ Example: 0.15, 0.86, etc.

◦ Non-terminating decimals are the one that does not have an end term. It has an infinite number of terms.
◦ Example: 0.5444444….., 0.1111111….., etc.
4. Define complex numbers with examples.
◦ The complex number is basically the combination of a real number and an imaginary number. The
complex number is in the form of a+ib, where a = real number and ib = imaginary number. Also, a,b
belongs to real numbers and i = √-1.
◦ Hence, a complex number is a simple representation of addition of two numbers, i.e., real number and an
imaginary number. One part of it is purely real and the other part is purely imaginary.
5. How will you define transitive property?
◦ A property is called transitive property, if x, y and z are the three quantities, and if x is related to y by
some rule, and y is related to z by the same rule, then we can say x is related to z by the same rule.

The transitive property can be used for relating the quantities if we have three or more than three
quantities. The transitive property can be applied to algebraic expressions , numbers, and different
geometrical concepts, in which the quantities are related by some rule.
