Philippine Medical

Association
The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) was founded in 1903 with
the primary goal of meeting the needs of medical practitioners in the
Philippines. The PMA has developed from a purely professional
organization to a vital and active participant in nation-building. The
EDSA revolution of 1986 personifies a nation's awakening to their
inherent potential to effect positive change in a wide range of issues
that touch their everyday lives.
• The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) is the umbrella organization

Background for medical doctors in the Philippines. It currently has 70,000 strong
physicians spread over its 118 component or regionally located
societies, as well as its 98 specialty and affiliate societies around the
and History country. The PMA has also signed various memoranda of agreement
for cooperation with major departments or agencies of the Philippine
government beyond its basic healthcare agreement with DOH. In the
last May 2010 national election, the PMA worked for the election of
former senators and then candidates for President and Vice-President
Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and Manuel "Mar" Roxas II respectively.
The PMA together with other health organizations crafted a
comprehensive Universal Healthcare Program for then candidate
Aquino to implement in his six-year term as President. The said
program also aims to address the maternal and child health, including
major infectious diseases, issues embedded in the United Nation's
Millennium Development Goals (UN-MDG).
• In 2005, total healthcare expenditure in the Philippines amounted to 165 billion pesos, or about 3.5% of the GNP. Our country's
health- care spending has been focused on "sick care" This is a highly inefficient way of using meager personal and government
health resources. The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) has launched a nationwide awareness campaign against non-
communicable diseases (NCDs). MPA's Smoke-Free Philippines advocacy admittedly is an uphill battle considering the odds against
it. We are confident that the strategy we set for this advocacy will in the end prove itself sufficient to eliminate this tobacco addiction
that has plagued this country for a long time. If we can succeed in this mission of getting rid of our country's smoking addiction then
indeed the other preventable health concerns will be more than doable for us to tackle.
•A dynamic responsive and unified PMA committed to serve its
members thru increased benefits, enhanced professional development,
and the promotion and defense of the rights and privileges of the
Medical Profession. These efforts, in partnership with other
organizations and the Government, shall contribute to excellent
healthcare delivery to its patients and the community at large. “PMA:
In a dedicated selfless and humane service of the Medical Profession
for a healthy Philippines and for the Glory of God.”
•To define standards and guidelines to promote quality medical
education in the Philippines and serve as the primary source of
technical data and information APMCFI recommends policies and
standards for medical education and assists medical schools achieve

MISSION
their respective goals APMCFI was founded in 1967 with the seven
(7) existing medical schools and the UP Institute of Public Health as
founding members. With the goal of ensuring quality medical
education, its initial activities were voluntary accreditation of the
schools and the formulation of core courses in the different disciplines.
It formulated policies and standards for medical education which were
adopted by the Board of Medical Education (BME). At present, the
Association is represented in the Technical Committee for Medical
Education (TCME) of the Commission on Higher Education. It is a
participant in the external accreditation of the MD Program of medical
schools under the Philippine Accrediting Association for Schools,
Colleges & Universities (PAASCU) as well as the Health Human
Resource Network which was created by the Department of Health.
VISION

Our vision in the Association is to have a fellowship of physicians united in the

common goal of acquiring the highest levels of medical knowledge and skills
through continuing education and research, and to promote the healing
ministrations of the physicians in the delivery of health care to patients.
