DIFFERENTIAL HEATING
 Heating difference---- THERMAL CIRCULATION
 Distribution of land and sea
 Karakteristik air :
panas yang diserap tidak langsung digunakan untuk
meningkatkan suhu, tetapi didistribusikan melalui
mekanisme konveksi, materi ikut bergerak
 Water characteristics:
 The heat absorbed is not directly used to increase
the temperature, but is distributed through a
convection mechanism, the material moves along
 Effect of surface slope (topography):
Slopes are heated first than valleys

 In the lowest air layer near the earth's surface, air
movement is more strongly influenced by surface
conditions, so the concept of gradient wind is no longer fully
applicable.

 This layer is called the planetary boundary layer or

atmospheric boundary layer (ABL).

 Differences in shape and surface roughness such as

surface height; vegetation; rivers, lakes and mountains; will
cause a difference in the pattern of air movement above it.

 Eddy (ies): when the wind meets a solid object, a circular air
movement (whirl, eddies) is formed on the downwind side
with the size, shape and speed proportional to the object in
its path and the wind speed

Chinook : rocky mountain; Foehn : peg Alpen

A chinook wall cloud forming over the Colorado Rockies (viewed from the plains)
Santa Ana Winds
 Warm, dry wind blowing from
the east or northeast towards
South Carolina
 Air descends from the top of the
desert plateau, through the
mountain valleys of the San
Gabriel and San Bernardino,
spreading over the Los Angeles
basin and Fernando valley
 Lifting dust and sand, drying
vegetation, bush fires.
DESERT WIND
 Sandstorm, dust devil, haboob

A haboob approaching Phoenix, Arizona. The dust cloud is rising to a

height of about 450 m (1475 ft) above the valley floor. Haboob forms
as cold downdrafts along leading edge of a thunderstorm lift dust or
sand into huge dark cloud that may cover over 100 kilometers
 The formation of a dust devil. On a hot,
dry day, the atmosphere next to the
ground becomes unstable. As the
heated air rises, wind blowing past an
obstruction twists the rising air, forming
a rotating column, or dust devil. Air from
the sides rushes into the rising column,
lifting sand, dust, leaves, or any other
loose material from the surface.
