French revolution
In the last quarter of the 18th century France was in a desperate state. They had
no money the Ordinary people were so poor and were treated harshly. About 90
percent of the population back then were the ordinary people and nobles.
The king with his bishops and officials ruled alone. Once there had been a kind
of parliament called the Estates General which made up of representatives of the
Church. The nobles and the ordinary people had little power.
Philosophers
There were a number of important philosophers in the 18th century. They wrote
books saying that the whole system in France was unfair. They said that all
people were equal and that all the ancient feudal duties should be abolished.
They wanted power to be taken away from the king and the church. They
mostly demanded that an elected parliament should help rule the country.
The peasants

The main cause of the revulution was the great gap between peasents. The Fedual
Nobles and the church treated the peasents like serfs. The peasants were generally
very poor living in conditions that were often worse than those of the lords animals
they looked after. They had to carry all the burdens of France only peasents had to
pay taxes only peasents had to work on the land and only peasents were forced to
serve in the army. They had to obey the kings officials their lord and the church.
Money Problems

By the 1780 France was almost Bankrupt. The long wars with England the great
palaces and the extravagant life of the court had taken all of the state money. The
nobles still refused to Pay tax and still squeezed so much out of the peasants. The
government had borrowed so much money that other countries wouldn't lend them
any more.
Bad Harvests

After a series of bad harvests the peasants could stand no more. They were
starving and taxes on food and drink were increased. The king Louis XVI was
very weak and although he tried to make some reforms to help the people his
nobles and ministers stopped him. By1789 things had got so bad that the thing
was forced to call the Estates General. He hoped they would be able to help
solve the money problem by getting more taxes from the peasants of course.
