INTRODUCTION TO HARBOURS AND PORTS • Harbour : Harbour is a place on the coast, naturally existing water body which opens to sea and where ships, boats and barges can seek shelter from a stormy weather of sea. • To meet the advanced industrial growth of a Nation or City, there are artificially created Harbours to provide sheltered water for the economical shipping activity and meet commodity requirement of local population. • Port: Ports are usually located on coast inside a Harbour. Often manmade structures provide industrial facility for ships to safely berth/dock and load or unload Cargo and other shipping activity including Dry Docking and repairs . Faculty: Capt. S P. Roy, 12 Topic: Types of Ports and Harbours • An inland port is a port on an inland waterway, such as a river, lake, or canal, which may or may not be connected to the sea. The term "inland port" is also used to refer to a dry port, which is an inland extension of a seaport, usually connected by rail to the docks. • The riverine ports are those ports which are located on the riverfront. ... The well known riverine ports in India are - Haldia in West Bengal, Sahebganj in Jharkhand, Farakka in West Bengal, and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh on the Ganges river and Dhubri in Assam on the Brahmaputra river • Tidal port are the ports in which the water level within the port are subject to change with the ocean tides. It is also a place fro where the energy is extracted from the tidal waves which is known as tidal energy. These are mainly found in coastal regions. Kandla is a tidal port in India.
