Nervevous System Black and White
MONIKA BHANDARI
The Nervous system
Millions of interconnected neurons form the nervous system.
2. Neuroglia
1. A cell body
2. It’s processes
a. one axon and
b. many dendrites
1. Multipolar neurons
2. Bipolar neurons
3. Pseudounipolar neurons
Classes of Neuron:
1. Sensory Neuron
3. Motor Neuron
1. Astrocytes,
2. Oligodendrocytes,
3. Microglia, and
4. Ependymal cells.
2. Satellite cells.
1. Excitability
2. Conductivity
Ion Channels and Gradients: Ions cannot pass through the hydrophobic portion of
the phospholipid bilayer of the plasma membrane because they are charged
particles.
For this reason, their movement across the plasma membrane is dependent on
specific protein channels.
There are two main classes of channels:
2. Gated channels.
Monika bhandari, ABESIT, Ghaziabad
1. Leak channels: are always open and continually allow ions to
follow their concentration gradient into or out of the cell.
2. Neuromuscular:
It is the synapse of a motor neuron and a muscle
3. Neuroglandular:
It is the synapse of a neuron and a endo/exocrine gland.
Dura mater
Arachnoid mater
Pia mater
This is a layer of fibrous tissue that lies between the dura and
pia maters.
It is separated from the dura mater by the subdural space that
contains a small amount of serous fluid, and from the pia
mater by the subarachnoid space, which contains
cerebrospinal fluid.
CSF is secreted continuously at a rate of about 0.5 mL per minute, i.e. 720 mL per
day.
The volume remains fairly constant at about 150 mL, as absorption keeps pace with
secretion
CSF pressure may be measured using a vertical tube attached to a lumbar puncture
needle inserted into the

Grey matter forms the surface of the cerebellum, and the white matter lies deeply
A cross-section of the
spinal cord shows that it is
composed of grey matter in
the centre surrounded by
white matter supported by
neuroglia. Monika bhandari, ABESIT, Ghaziabad
Grey matter:
The arrangement of grey matter in the spinal cord resembles the shape of
the letter H, having two posterior, two anterior and two lateral columns.
