Jaigad Fort

• Also known as the Fort of Victory


• Buit by Bijapur Kings
• 16th century
• Later passed into the hands of Naiks of Sangameshwar.
• 13 acres
• On a cliff, overlooking the Jaigad creek where river
Shastri enters Arabian Sea
• In 1818, British captured without any struggle
• The spectacular fort consists of a high upper fortress
connected by bastions on the edge of the cliff and 2
sweet water wells on shore

Jaigad Lighthouse

• Opposite to the Bhagvati Fort


• Built by the British Government
• Overlooks the Arabian Sea
• Known for the sunset view now

Ratnadurg Fort

• Also known the Bhagvati Fort


• It was built in 16th century later in 1670 won by Shivaji Mharaj.
• Have a shape of Horse Shoe
• Length- 1300m and width- 1000m
• Strong fortifications from south-east to west side
• Lighthouse on the ‘Siddha Bastion’
• Tunnel that joins the upper fort to the bottom foot
• View of the entire area through the entrance gate

Purnagad Fort

• Ancient Sea fort


• On a mountain at the confluence of Muchkundi creek and the
Arabian sea
• Believed that the fort was built by Shivaji Maharaj but some
evidences say that by Sakhoji Aangre, son of Kanhoji Angre
• 22 acres, 2 entrance gates
• Entrance door is a very robust structure between 2 bastions
• Staircases from 4 sides to reach the top of the fort

Tilak Ali Museum

• Birth place of Lokmanya Tilak


• Ancestral home converted into museum by the
Government

Thibaw Palace

• Built by British
• Last Burmese monarch, King Thibaw was sent to evile here
• Situated on the hillock
• Burmese teak wood id used
• 6 CE statues in it
• Unique location overlooking Ratnagiri Bay

Panhalakaji Caves

• The Hinayana sect began carving in 3rd century AD,


beginning with the stupa in the current cave 5
• Have inscriptions in Brahmi and Devanagari script
• In the 10th-11th century AD, the Vajrayana sect, established
cave 10 with their deities Akshosabhya and
Mahachandroshana
• Shiva and Ganpatya worshipping started during Silahara
rule
• Cave 14 has deities of Nath Pantha
• Cave 19 has Shivlinga in it and Hindu scriptures on its
ceiling
• Cave 29 was used by Nath Pantha and was renamed as
Gaur Lena.

Harnai Fort

• Located at a distance of 17 km from Dapoli


• There are two famous forts on Harnai fort suvarnadurg
and kanadurga.
• Kanadurg is the land and suvanadurg is the sea fort.
• The port was build by Adil Shah and captured by Shivaji
Mharaj.

Shahi Masjid – Dabhol

• Masjid was built in 16 century.


• It was built by Aisha Bibi princess of Bijapur and
counstructed by Kamil Khan.qs
• It was built in Irani style architecture with impeccably
symmetry.
• The main hall of the mosque is adorned with three
arches, a hand sculpted slab and four symmetrical
.
minarets in all four corners.

St. Anne’s Church

• It was said to be built in Maratha Peshwa Empire.


• Few Portuguese engineer came from Goa for the repair work
of suvanadurga fort and built this church.
• Church is a worship place for catholic people.

Dapoli camp

• Between 1818 and 1891 the word “Camp Daploi” was


established.
• Around 200 years ago by British East India Company.
• Camp Dapoli in entire Kokan belt is the only safest place
for britishers.
• During this era camp Dapoli witnessed major socio-
cultural and political developments.

Folklore

• It is believed that the Mythological King “Putraka” created Ratnagiri


by magic for his Queen Patali, literally Trumpet flower. Thus gives
ancient name “Pataligrama”.
• In honour to the first born to the Queen, kater known as Pataliputra.

• It is said that Gautam Buddha passed through Ratnagiri during last


years of his life.
• He prophesized a great future also a ruin from flood, fire and feud.
