HAVELI

WHAT IS HAVELI?

Basically, a type of private mansion in India.

Haveli is generic term used for a traditional Townhouse and Mansion one with
historical and architectural significance.
It was also self-confined and totally hidden from the view of passerby.
The word haveli is derived from Arabic haveli, meaning "partition" or "private
space" popularized under Mughal Empire and was devoid of any architectural
affiliations.

HISTORY OF HAVELI
Havelis of India have major impact from Indian, Central Asian and Islamic Persian
architecture. Almost all havelis have a courtyard with a fountain in the center.
Mughal-style havelis are considered the finest. The beautifully decorated havelis
of India speak much about the glory of the royal kings and queens.
The earliest evidence of havelis was found in 3300 BCE. The haveli was basically
built around a courtyard which was a basic element, around which all activities
took place. Courtyard also know as chowk. The courtyard serves as a medium of
light and helps ventilate the house in the hot and dry climates of the region.
During the medieval period, the term haveli was first referred to temples
in Gujarat under the Mughal Empire and Rajputana kingdoms. The generic
term haveli eventually came to be identified with townhouses and mansions of
the merchant class.

In Jaipur, the havelis are often narrow so that as many as possible can overlook
the main streets.
Havelis were constructed so as to provide pleasant spaces for different seasons
and times of the day. Rooms opened through verandas onto courtyards and
terraces, allowing a movement of air through a range of different types of spaces.
Noblemen ran their estates from their havelis, and merchants frequently worked
from home. Many visitors came on business , and the havelis often contained,
besides the grand reception room used for both business and family occasions.
The stables and servant’s quarters were generally in a separate chowk or on the
ground floor.
