THE CONTEXT OF
THE FOUR
PILLARS OF
EDUCATION
The four pillars of education is
UNESCO’s Vision of Education in
United Nations
the New Education,
Millennium andScientific
the
and Cultural
UNESCO’s Organizations
concocted formula to
best prepare the 21st century
learners to survive in the 21 st

century environment.
It originated as a report drawn by
the UNSECO international
Commission on Education for the
Twenty-first Century titled,
Learning: the Treasure Within,
headed by Jacques Delors in 1996.
The Philippines, as a member
country of UNESCO, subscribes
to this vision and the Philippine
educational system is duty-
bound to implement this avowal.

LEARNING TO
KNOW
“Give a man
(Development of theaHead:
fish ;Knowledge)
you have
fed him for a day. Teach a man
how to fish ; and you have fed
him for a lifetime .”
–Chinese Proverb
As a means, students have to
learn to understand the world
around them, and as an end,
they should ultimately obtain
the joy and the benefit of
knowing.
a) to learn and to discover
b) to understand about his/her
environment
c) to think in a coherent and
critical way
d) to acquire a knowledge of
the scientific methods and
instruments
e) to develop a scientific spirit and
an inquiring mind
f) to acquire independence of
judgment
Scientific Spirit
Scientific
Spirit
“Learning to know means training in the
methods or instruments that help individuals
distinguish what is real from what is false or
illusory and to have intelligent access to the
knowledge of this age.”
– Basarab Nicolescu (1996)
LEARNING TO DO
“I hearofand
(Development I forget.
the Hand: I see
Skills and Actions)
and I remember. I do and I
understand .”
– Confucius
Learning under this pillar does not only
mean preparing the students for work, but
it must also transform those skills certified by
schools into personal competence throughout
life.
These personal competencies are often
referred to as people skills or
interpersonal skills
by employers.
It is required that education must
allow the development not only of
occupational knowledge, but also of a
mix of skills and talents, social behavior,
personal initiative, and a willingness to
work, thus preparing students both in
the world of work and
throughout life.
Learning to do is very much related
to learning by doing as espoused by
John Dewey.
Students prefer “doing” rather
than “listening.”
-Marilyn Lombardi
LEARNING TO BE
“ To be what we are and to
(Development of the Heart: Awareness and Understanding)

become what we are capable of

becoming is the only end of life”
– Robert Louis Stevenson
a)development of the mind and body,
intelligence, sensitivity, aesthetic
sense, personal responsibility, and
spiritual values;

b)development of the qualities

of imagination and creativity;
c) complete fulfillment of man, in all
the richness of his personality;
d) full flowering of human potential
or the tapping of the hidden treasure
within each individual.
Learning to be suggests that
human beings are in the journey
of self-becoming. In this journey,
one must have the freedom to
choose as this is a requirement in
the process of becoming.

EXAMPLE:
If one thinks of life as a series of choices, then
learning to be is the process of making each
decision a choice for growth. Human beings, in
the process of self-realization, have to discover
their potentials and talents, set their aspirations,
define their goals, and act to fulfill them.
LEARNING TO
LIVE TOGETHER
(Development
“Peace of Values:
must begin Attitudes)
with each one of us.
Through quite and serious reflection on its
meaning, new and creative ways can be
found to foster understanding, friendship,
and cooperation among all people .”
– Javier Perez de Cuellar
Learning to live together is the
ultimate goal of the study of
Social Dimensions of
Education, and it is the greatest
challenge among all the pillars
of learning.
Essentially, understanding each
other and resolving conflicts
through dialogue and peaceful
discussions are the essential tools
needed by present day education
to fulfill this pillar of learning.

FOUR PILLARS OF EDUCATION is
defined to be “learning that allows the students
to take a journey from continuous learning
throughout life to learning to live together in
peace and harmony in a globalizing world.”
TWO STAGES OF JOURNEY:

1.Individual level
2.Societal or global level

THE PHILOSOPHY OF
THE FOUR PILLARS OF EDUCATION

“learning throughout life”- a very comprehensive and
lifelong concept of learning that covers a person’s sum of
experiences (from birth until death), or from various stages
of human life, places, situations, persons, institutions and
activities of life that enable him to reach his maximum
potentials as human being.
TWO-FOLD PURPOSES:
1.to promote the formation of the human
person in all his or her dimension and all
stages of his or her development;
2. to make each adult an active builder
of his or her future and of the future
of the communities which he or she
belongs.
TWO CENTRAL FUNCTIONS:

1.Individual purpose
2.Societal or global purpose
