ENVIRONMENT POLLUTION
AND ENVIRONMENT
POLLUTANTS
INTRODUCTION
 Pollution has become the first enemy of the
mankind.
 Technological advancement has brought
revolutionary changes in life style and national
economy with overwhelming power over nature.
 The protection of environment has become a major
issue around the global for the well being of the
people and economic development.
MEANING AND DEFINITION OF
POLLUTION
 Pollution has been defined as the deliberate or
accidental contamination of the environment with
man’s waste.
 Pollution is matter in the wrong place.
 Pollution is anything that is released into the
environment which degrades it.
 Pollution is presence of matter or energy is an
unusual or unintended place.
TYPES OF POLLUTION
 Air pollution
 Water pollution
 Noise pollution
 Soil pollution
 Radiation pollution
CAUSES OF ENVIRONMENTAL
POLLUTION
 Uncontrolled growth in human population
 Rapid industrialization
 Urbanization
 Uncontrolled exploitation of nature
 Forest fires , radioactivity , volcanic eruptions ,
strong winds etc
 Transportation ,Agricultural activities , trading
activities
EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL
POLLUTION
 Effects on humans
 Effects on animals
 Effects on plants and the ecosystem.

SUGGESTED STEPS FOR POLLUTION CONTROL

 Industrial and solid waste management
 Enforcement of rules and regulation
 Urban transport management
POLLUTANT

 The substances or factors that causes pollution are

known as pollutants.
 It may be defines as a physical, chemical or
biological substance unintentionally released into
the environment which is directly or indirectly
harmful to humans and other living organism.
ENVIRONMENT POLLUTANTS
1.Deposited matter such as dust , smoke , tar ,grit,
soot etc.
2.Gases like sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide, carbon
monoxide ,nitrogen oxide , hydrogen sulphide ,
ammonia , fluorine , chlorine , etc.
3.Chemical compounds such as aldehydes , arsenics,
fluorides , detergents etc.
4.Metals like lead , iron , zinc , mercury etc.
5.sewage
6.radio-active substances
7.agrochemicals like
fertilizers,pesticides,fungicides,insecticides etc
8.Photo chemical oxidants
9.Noise and heat
Types of pollutant
 Air pollutant
 Paticulate pollutant ,carbon mono oxide, nitrogen
oxide,sulphur oxide,lead etc
 Water pollutant
 Mercury,nitrates,bacterial pollution etc
 Soil pollutant
 Cadmium ,copper,zinc,herbicides etc
 Noise pollutant
 Sounds generated by
aircraft,trains,boats,automobiles,vehiclehorn.loud music etc
 From the ecosystem view point, these pollutants can be
classified in to two basic types
 NON-BIODEGRADABLE POLLUTANTS
 Materials and poisonous substances like aluminium ,mercurial
salts, long chain phenolic chemicals like plastics, polythene, pvc
etc
 DDT that either do not degrade or degrade only very slowly in
nature.
 BIODEGRADABLE POLLUTANTS

 The domestic wastes like sewage, used paper cups etc, that can
be rapidly decomposed under natural conditions.
 Problems arise with the biodegradable pollutants only when
their input into environment exceeds the decomposition or
dispersal capacity i.e. when they accumulate.
CONCLUSION
 Environmental pollution is causing a lot of distress
not only to humans but also animals, driving many
animal species to endangerment and even
extinction
 The transboundary nature of environment
pollution makes it even more difficult to mange it
