VENN DIAGRAM

A pictorial presentation of relation and operation

on set. It show all hypothetically possible logical
relations between finite collections of set.

A Venn diagram is constructed with a collection

of simple closed curves drawn in the plane or
normally comprise of overlapping circles.
Operation on
Set
UNION

The union of A and B, denoted by A  B, is

the set of all elements found in A or B or both
A  B  x | x  A or x  B

Example :
A  1, 2, 3, 4, 5 B  5, 6, 7,8
A  B  1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,8
INTERSECTION
The intersection of A and B, denoted by A  B,
is the set of all elements common to A and B
A  B = x | x  A and x  B

Example :
A  1, 2, 3, 4, 5 B  5, 6, 7,8
A  B  5
COMPLEMENT
The complement of A, denoted by A ', is the set
of all elements in universal set but not found in A
A ' = x | x U and x  A

Example :
A  1, 2, 3 , U  1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
A '  4, 5, 6
DIFFERENCE

The difference of A and B, denoted by A  B,

is the set of all elements found in A but not in B

A  B = x | x  A and x  B

B A  x | x  B and x  A
Example :
A  2, 4, 6,8, B  1, 6,8, 9
A  B  2, 4
B  A  1, 9
SYMMETRIC DIFFERENCE
The symmetric difference of A and B, denoted by A  B, is
the set of all elements belong to A and B, but not both A and B

A  B = x | x  A  B  and x   A  B 
Example :
A  2, 4, 6,8 , B  1, 6,8, 9
A  B  1, 2, 4, 9
DISJOINT SETS

Two sets are called disjoint (non-intersecting) if

and only if, they have no elements in common.

Example :
A  1, 2 , B  3, 4
therefore sets A and B are disjoint set
baa, b   b, a 

ORDERED PAIR

In the ordered pair  a, b  , a is the first element of the

pair and b is the second element. In general,  a , b   b, a 
AB

CARTESIAN PRODUCT

Cartesian product of A and B, A  B, consist of all ordered

pairs whose first element is in A and second element is in B

A×B=  x,y | x  A and y  B

Example :

S  a , b T  c , d , e
S  T   a , c  a , d  a , e b, c b, d b, e 

A  1, 2, 3 B  4, 5
A  B  1, 4 1, 5  2, 4  2, 5 3, 4 3, 5 
