INTRODUCION:
Cupping therapy is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy that has been used for more
than 3000 years. It involves using special cups to apply suction over the skin of an affected area.
Many different methods are used to produce a vacuum inside the cup to create the suction, from
heating the cup to using a mechanical pump to suck the air out. The negative pressure created in
the cup causes the skin to draw upwards into the cup. The cups are then left in place or moved
around the skin to improve the blood circulation in the area , rid of the body toxins, improve general
well being

HISTORY OF CUPPING:

While cupping therapy is most commonly associated with TCM, it has been a staple of folk
medicine in many regions of the world, including Egypt, the middle east, India, Ancient Greece,
And parts of Africa
cupping is known as hejama or hijama in Arabic. The founder of Islam,
Muhammed was
known to be an advocate of cupping and even mentioned it through his writings.
HOW DOES CUPPING WORKS :
1. Increase blood circulation:
when blood gets sucked into the area underneath the cup, local blood
circulation increases. This increased blood circulation extends down to the muscle layer,
helping cells that are in the area to repair faster.

2. Relieving pain:
Cupping increase the pain threshold in the area. first, it activates small
diameter nerves in the muscles, which send impulses to spinal cord, where neurotransmitter
are released to block the pain message form reaching the brain. Cupping lifts the fascia from
the muscle that reduces muscle tightness and pain. By using wet cupping, pain is reduced
by draining out lactic acid from the muscle.

3. Removing toxins:
Increase in blood circulation in the area allows the toxins trapped in the
Soft tissue layer, right underneath the skin . WBC tend to congregate and patrol the body
surface so when the toxins rise to the surface, they can quickly mop up the toxins.
TYPES OF CUPS:

1) Plastic vacuum cups 2) Twist rotary cups 3) Silicone cups 4) Glass cups

5) Bamboo cups. 6) Horn cups 7) Electric cups

2)Oil cupping:
* Fascial relaxation:
principle:
*Identify the muscle.
* Lubricate the area.
* Pump the cup on the muscle belly.
* Drag the cup from the origin of muscle towards its insertion.
* Fat reduction:
Principle:
* Identify the area or muscle.
* Lubricate the area.
* Pump the cup and drag it up and down & side to side.

* Muscle stimulation:
Principle:
*Identify the muscle.
* Lubricate the area.
*Drag the cup along the muscle fibre up and down and Viceversa but not
perpendicular to the muscle fibre
3) FIRE CUPPING:
Fire cupping is an alternative, non- invasive treatment technique that uses special cupps such as
glass, bamboo and horn cups placed on the skin to encourage blood flow to damaged areas.this
therapy is recommended to patients who suffer from muscular pain, joint pain, skin problems and gastric
issues.

Principle:
* Identify the area and choose the type of cup accordingly.
* Heat the cup using candle by moving the flame inside the cup.
* Remove the flame and place the cup on the area as quickly as possible.
* Heat and width of cup opening is directly propotional to the vacuum inside the cup.
4) WET CUPPING:
Wet cupping is used to remove toxins from organs and muscles there by improving their function.

* Create a mild suction by leaving a cup in place for about 8-10 minutes
* Removes the cup and uses a small scalpel to make tiny cuts on skin.
* Do a second suction to draw out a small quantity of blood.
5) NEEDLE CUPPING:
Combined dry needling and cupping technique is used to relieve pain by releasing endorphins
to that area.

Principle:

* Choose the muscle area

* Insert a sterile filiform needle into the muscle
* Place a cup on top of it
* Make only weak or medium suction
* Don’t make strong suction
6) ICE CUPPING:
Ice cupping is one of the most immediate treatment technique for acute injuries such as sprains
and strains, overuse injuries, contusions and bruises. It reduces swelling and inflammation by reducing
blood flow to the injured area and also provides temporary pain relief.

Principle:
* Place a ice cube depend on the cup size over a injured area
* Place a cup on top of it
* Make a pump as it is needed
7)HERBAL CUPPING:
Herbal cupping consists of soaking bamboo cups in a hot herbal decoction before applying them
to the skin. The pores inside the bamboo cups will absorb the herbal decoction and the skin absorb the
active ingredients as the cup stays on the body. Herbal decoction will vary depending upon the
recepients condition.

Principle:

* Make a herbal decoction

* Soak the bamboo cup in the herbal decoction overnight
* Place the cup on skin using fire cupping technique
* The cups are retained for around 20 minutes in order for the body to absorb the herbs.

Selection of herbal decoction:

Select the herb and boil it on the water around 15 minutes until the water came to half of its
quantity.
* To reduce pain and inflammation on muscles and organs – Ginger + Tulsi + Turmeric
* To reduce joint pain – Balloon vine (mudakathan keerai)
* To reduce skin infection – Indian nettle ( kuppaimeni)

REFERENCE :
Water cupping is a way to cool the body very quickly, and it is good for pain thatfeels
better with cold, such as inflammatory pain that is red, swollen, and feels hot to touch. It also used to
cool down someone who has a lot of heat in the body. Herbal decoctions also used in needed
conditions instead of plane water.

Principle:

* Adding an ounce of water to the cups before applying them to the body
* The cups have to be applied very quickly to avoid spilling the water
* Suction is then applied to the cup
