RULE 1: Addition between two
positive numbers
RULE 2: Addition between two
negative numbers
EXAMPLES:
1. 17 + 15 = 32
POSITIVE + POSITIVE = POSITIVE

2. - 18 + (-11) = - 29
NEGATIVE + NEGATIVE = NEGATIVE

RULE3:

Adding a positive number with a


negative number is done by finding
the difference between the absolute
value of both numbers. Then, the
sign with the greater number will
attach to the sum.
RULE4:

The sum of an integer and


its or opposite is 0.
EXAMPLE: 6 + (-6) =0

2. 25 + (-11) = 14

OF INTEGERS
RULE:
In subtracting integers, change
the sign of a subtrahend and
proceed to addition.
EXAMPLES:
12 - 8 =

12 + (-8) = 4
EXAMPLES:

-25 - (-15) =

-25 + (15) = -10

Solution: 104 - (-18) = N
104 + 18 = N

An airplane takes off and then climbs
2500 feet. After 20 minutes, the
airplane descends 150 feet.  What is
the airplane's current height?

Solution: 2500 - 150 = N


2500 + (-150) = N
2350 = N
