Origin of Athletics – Origen del Atletismo

The origins of modern athletics are to be found, like those of

almost all sports, in England. The vast majority of today's
events were invented by English university students: the long
jump, the triple jump, hurdles and hurdles events, etc. They
were also the ones who established the distances for the
different types of races.
As for foot races, it seems that they emerged as a new
alternative to the horse races that were so popular in
England.
History of Athletics – Historia del Atletismo

The word athletics comes from the Greek "athlon" which means fight,
competition, combat. Nothing is known of the first sports tournaments,
but it could very well have started in a foot race. Athletic events have been
held for more than three thousand years. They were part of the original
Olympics held in Greece from 776 B.C. to A.D. 394. These were held on the
occasion of the institution of the Panathenaic Games in honor of Pallas
Athena. Running was the most practiced exercise by Greek athletes, who
at the age of 12 began their preparation on the track or in the gymnasium.
The first tracks laid out on flat surfaces measured 192.27m and were
covered with coarse, loose sand that made it difficult to run freely. The test
that consisted of covering that distance was called seasonal and the
double lap around the track, diaulio; the 4500m test, Dorian race.
Athletics rules – Reglas del Atletismo

The truth is that it cannot be said that athletics has specific rules. As we
have explained in the section on what is athletics, this sport is made up
of very different events and disciplines. For this reason, each of the
athletics events has its own rules and regulations.
Athletic Apparel – Vestuatio de Atletismo

Athletic clothing is a type of sportswear designed exclusively for

athletics, an activity that requires good equipment to practice it safely.
